Iggy68 28 #1 Posted January 12, 2010 Has anyone ever put a tach on an older tractor? Have some scheming going on in my head Want to know the rpms at different speeds so I do not destroy anything :banghead:
Rollerman 290 #2 Posted January 12, 2010 If the governor is working & the engine is healthy it shouldn't self destruct from an over rev. You might want to check out "Tiny Tach" they are real easy to install & work great on small engines. http://www.tinytach.com/tinytach/index.php
Iggy68 28 #3 Posted January 12, 2010 I am not worried about the engine, worried about things I might hook up to the pto.
Dave M 0 #4 Posted January 12, 2010 Due to an over-revving problem I have been dealing with, as well as wanting to know my idle rpms and maximum efficient rpm's on my 416 Kohler, I had the same question about tachs. I think a small engine tach tool for checking rpms is pretty expensive. But, I found a tach made by SenDEC from Northern Tool. It also is an hour meter with a couple of service indicator warnings. It's really pretty cool. And for under $40 delivered, I had to try it. It's also an easy one wire hook-up. You might want to give it a try. Looks like it's pretty similar to the TinyTach that Iggy68 was talking about.
WheelHorse_of_course 99 #5 Posted January 12, 2010 You might consider a "sirometer". This is a mechanical/vibration tachomter. Since they are mechanically based, you can actually check the RPM of the driven device. They go for about $20 from the tools section of a number of the companies in the links section. Once a year I put this on my Chipper to remind me of what the correct RPM sounds like. I think we have covered this before... Yes we have... http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/index.php?...95&hl=sirometer http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/index.php?...64&hl=sirometer
Dave M 0 #6 Posted January 12, 2010 Sorry Mark (Iggy68), I meant the one (TinyTach) that Rollerman, was talking about. Never heard of the sirometer. Sounds interesting, and less expensive.
WheelHorse_of_course 99 #7 Posted January 12, 2010 Sorry Mark (Iggy68), I meant the one (TinyTach) that Rollerman, was talking about. Never heard of the sirometer. Sounds interesting, and less expensive. The sirometer is used for tune-up, adjustments and such. It is not intended for permanent mounting. The tiny tach and sentech are meant for permanent mounting. They are great for hour meters but the tach feature may not be that useful if it is jumpy. Have a look at the other threads for additional comments.
rickv1957 75 #8 Posted January 13, 2010 I have a tach on a Charger 10 that I purchased a while back, works great but havent looked at the brand,Rick
WheelHorse_of_course 99 #9 Posted January 13, 2010 Another thing to consider is lifespan. I know the Tiny Tach is battery powered (and I presume the Sentech as well). I am guessing they have a good life, but since we expect our horses to be around another 40 years plus, I am guessing they will outlive the tachometers!
