Shuboxlover 481 #1 Posted January 11, 2010 So I bought this tractor yesterday. Finally had time to try and get it running. Checked oil, little low no biggie. cleaned plug. put new fuel line and filter on, cleaned outside of carb. checked spark, has spark, but is MISSING the points cover turns over easy when plug is out. When I put the plug back in, it turns over ALOT harder, is that because they have alot of compression? Can't get it to fire, I can see the fuel filter filling with gas every time it turns over so I am assuming that the pump is working. BUT!!!!!! I notice oil is leaking out, I look around and find that the crank case cover (on the bottom of the motor) is missing two bolts and the other two are loose Now I am freaking out because the guy I bought it from said it was running when he parked it. After I calm down a bit, I decide to get a couple bolts, bolt it back together and try again. I cleaned up the points a bit but noticed that when I open and close the points manually the plug fires and then also notice that the coil is so hot I can barely touch it (the key is on) I also have to jump across the solenoid in order for it to turn over. lots of questions and concerns, so any help would be great. Sparky-(Admin) 23,172 #2 Posted January 11, 2010 That hot coil is not good. Was the key left on? That could wreck the points I'm told. Might be a good idea to get a wiring diagram for it and make sure all is good before firing it off. It would suck to fry an electrical component. Mike............. Shuboxlover 481 #3 Posted January 11, 2010 Ya, I left the ignition on that was probably the reason huh? BUT GOOD NEWS....I got it running, I put a new battery in it, and after a couple minutes of tinkering, It fired off and ran surprisingly well, not great but well. It stunk up my whole garage and made my eyes burn, so it must be running a little rich. QUESTIONS??? There is a very audible ticking/clinking/clicking noise on the left (flywheel) side of the motor, I can't narrow it down, but it kinda seems like it's coming from around the starter...any ideas? Also when it is running, I can see sparks coming from the starter shroud....at first I thought it was jumping a spark from under the starter shroud to the starter housing body, but I think its just coming from under the starter shroud.....and ideas?? It is still dripping a little oil, is that gasket a B**** to replace? If I do replace it, should I do anything else while I'm in there???
clintonnut 126 #4 Posted January 11, 2010 See if the drive gear spring is broken on the starter. Also make sure the starter isn't running while the engine is. Charlie
Shuboxlover 481 #5 Posted January 11, 2010 how do I know if the starter is running when the engine is on? if it is, what is the remedy Thanks
gwgdog66 23 #6 Posted January 11, 2010 how do I know if the starter is running when the engine is on? if it is, what is the remedy Thanks Glad to hear you have it running. You can pull your engine shroud. Since it set for a while the starter gear might not be disengaging the fly wheel causing the sparks. That could be the ticking you are hearing. Good time to clean out any critter nests that might have been in it also. If the spring on the starter is ok, get you some graphite and put it on the starter shaft.
