W9JAB 156 #1 Posted January 8, 2010 I bought this thing for $100, I know the chain was shot, so new chain. Then I need to get it hooked up to the tractor, needed to get some spacers made. Get it running, the drive gear let go and destroyed the drive shaft. New shaft and gear, replaced drive shaft bearings at same time. Last night go out, get one pass, drive chain get's throne off, and find that the driven gear that is welded to the auger is shot, the chain from slipping over the gear had ground off the teeth. Now I need to find a new auger.

rickv1957 70 #3 Posted January 8, 2010 Can a new gear be installed on auger,I get my share of the money out the door myself, good luck Rick
W9JAB 156 #4 Posted January 8, 2010 Can a new gear be installed on auger? That is a good question, as I see it the gear is welded to the shaft, if one had a leathe you could spin cut the weld so you would be able to position the new gear, tack & true it up then finish the weld. But to go to a shop to have that done will not be cheap!

W9JAB 156 #7 Posted January 8, 2010 My sprocket was bad too ,was bent from when the chain came off. This sprocket is not bent, I could deal with that. The theeth are ground off to the point that the chain can no longer ride on it.

TT-(Moderator) 1,128 #11 Posted January 9, 2010 I don't know the exact size of the auger sprocket, but my local TSC store carries weld-on sprockets. Here's a link to another source: Weld on sprockets
Duvall 0 #12 Posted January 9, 2010 I got the sprocket for McMaster Carr. 6793K158 1 Each Steel Machinable-bore Sprocket, For #40 Chain, 1/2" Pitch, 30 Teeth, 5/8" Min Bore $33.33 The sprocket that I bought has a shoulder on it so it was easier to get straight. It is also made to have the hole machined to the proper size. I have a close friend with a lathe make the hole the correct size and slide it on. The old one I removed by cutting the welds with a cut-off wheel and cleaning up the auger shaft with a file.
Duvall 0 #13 Posted January 9, 2010 Picture is worth a couple words. It will get welded on the side with the shoulder.

W9JAB 156 #15 Posted January 12, 2010 :banghead: First thanks for all the replys, I don't know what direction I will go at this time, for now I'm just going to put the blade on. But with this last failer, I have been thinking that the orginal chain is a 41, and as long as I need to put a main sprocket on I will go to a 50 chain, same as my old hog. Also I see the later units use a second idler at the top that will give more chain contact on the main sprocket, I think this will keep the chain from slipping on the drive sprocket and grinding it away, if it jams the belt should slip.
