How tight should tie rod ends be?

Recommended Posts

I noticed that the studs where the tie rod ends connect to the spindles were rocking back and forth on my 314-H. I took a wrench to them and snugged them down and was surprised by how much effort it took to move the nuts. Maybe this was because the threads were a little boogered up but it seemed to me that the nuts were some sort of jam nut. If it wasn't 16

The nuts are a crimp-style locking design and - along with all fasteners on your equipment - should be checked periodically and tightened as needed. Don't "Herc out" on these and twist them off, but they do need to be tight.

Thanks for the confirmation and warning. They're snug now and I didn't break anything. I'll keep an eye out for other loose things.

Hank, during my rebuilds I've been putting a lock washer on those (and almost every other nut, bolt or part I can fit one on to) to keep things from working loose. I use blue threadlocker where I can't fit a lockwasher or if adding one looks too foolish.

JMHO.... :banghead:
