Connecting rod mods

Recommended Posts

rick

I have my K241 off the C-100 pulled down, and will be going to the machine shop this afternoon.

Somewhere, I forget now, I saw where there is a machine shop that machines the big end of the connecting rod for inserts, and can offset the hole to give the piston some pop up to increase compression a little....Can anyone give me a link?

Thanks

Some 10hp kohlers have K301 instead or K241 cast into them and they can be overbored to k301 12hp spec. You can machine new rods to accept bearings and update to the new piston Mahle I think, installing the 18hp K361 camshaft has more duration but I don't know if the smaller k241 would really benefit from it. Good luck

Steve's link above takes you to Brian Miller's shop. Everything I've ever read or heard about him is very positive - sort of to small engines what TT (and others I'm finding) is to Wheel Horse tractors!

That's the bad part about "modding" a K-241.......

By the time you have it machined and buy all of the parts (the K-361 cam is grossly overrated but acceptable in most stock pulling classes - hence the popularity and outrageous price) you could probably have a nice strong stock K-321 or K-341.

The last I heard on another GT site was that Brian Miller was incarcerated.

I would check with Kevin at Pipestone Small Engine in Eau Claire Michigan

http://pipestonesmallengine.com/home.asp

Kevin has the ability to do most any machining process any of use would need.I have had him balance a K series flywheel for a rebuild I am doing.

Kevin did tell me he does not recommend boring non Kohler rods because of a large void he found in one.

Thanks for the help! I was pleasantly surprised, the rod and crank are fine, and the the bore needs a .010 cleanup.

I was considering the "rod mod" in the event the crank throw needed turning. This is going to be a grass cutter, not a puller.

I understand what you are saying, TT. If I had needed to buy an oversize rod, I would have thought about getting Brian Miller to machine the rod for inserts, and having him offset the hole for a little piston pop up as well.

I really like this C-100, if everything works out with it, I may sell the 310-8 and the C-111. I still have my eye on the 416-H, but they won't come off $1599.00.

That sounds good, but a little too far. Something will turn up locally, I am not in that much of a hurry.

Horse Rancher

we run the rod bearing setup on almost all

of our engines my pulling engine had 8 years

of unlimited rpm abuse when torn down

for a overhaul the crank was only .0015

under we also use napa 15w50 synthetic

oil in all our engines with good success

with syenthetic you will notice your engine

will start easier in winter as for the 10hp

i would switch to the 12 ,6more ci and

more stroke
