stevebo-(Moderator) 8,102 #1 Posted January 3, 2010 Guys, I just picked up a 753 today that has some rust in the tank. I wanted to know if the tank off of my 854 is the same as the one on my 753? I plan on doing a restore on the 753 and want to make sure it is correct. Thanks-
TT-(Moderator) 1,129 #2 Posted January 3, 2010 The tanks are aluminum, Stevebo. Are you sure that it's not just old dried gas? If it is actually rust, get some "Iron Out" powder (in the plumbing section at WalMart, etc.) and dump some in the tank with some warm water. Let it soak for a little while and rinse it out. If it doesn't clean up enough to suit you, the tanks will interchange.
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,102 #3 Posted January 3, 2010 I assume they are the same tank then?? The other issue it that the side of it has a small chunk taken out of it. Thanks TT
sorekiwi 761 #4 Posted January 3, 2010 As far as I know, there are only 2 tanks Steve. The one piece one used till late '62 and the 2 piece used thereafter. However the two piece ones were prone to leak, so you sometimes see an early one piece tank on a later tractor. Your next step - clean it out like Terry said, then start searching for all the posts that begin with "how do I stop my 2 piece tank leaking?"
sorekiwi 761 #5 Posted January 3, 2010 The two piece tank is the right one for the 854 and the 753. It has a removable bottom on the casting, and "scallops" cast into the sides. The one piece tank is smooth on the sides, and is uhmm... 1 piece!
rickv1957 70 #6 Posted January 3, 2010 I prefer the 1 piece tank for sure,Rick
