Dale 0 #1 Posted December 30, 2009 i have 3 plows 8 10 12 the mount get higher the bigger they get does the bigger plow go deeper Attached Image
Curmudgeon 28 #2 Posted December 30, 2009 Mostly wider, but I suspect it could go a little deeper as well. The question might be, can you pull it? Odds are, yeah, unless you're in hard ground, but wider is already harder to pull than narrower, add in more depth, and you're turning a lotta dirt.
big mike 13 #3 Posted December 31, 2009 The rule of thumb is to run it half it's width in depth.....8" plow 4" deep. The yokes are at different heights because different tractors take a different setup. The 8" has less "point" the 12" has the most point. It usually takes 7 or 8 hp to pull an 8",10 or more for a 10" and 14 and up for a 12". 6-12 tires fit nicely in the furrow of an 8" or 10" but likely will not give enough traction to pull a 12". 23-8.50s work good with 10 and 12". 23-10.50 and 26-12x12s will work with a 12" but can give a rough ride because of the width. If your moldboard is rusty or pitted find some nice sugar sand and it will shine up in no time.Until the moldboard has a good shine,or scour, it can be hard to get a good furrow and it will pull harder. It takes a coulter to cut a sharp furrow wall.To stop the coulter for plugging up with trash(crop residue on the surface of the field)you can cut notches into the coulter disc. Oh man,I can't WAIT til spring!!!!!!!
dkopp 1 #4 Posted December 31, 2009 My father-in-law has a 10 in plow that he used on his Case. I was wondering if my C-111 was going to be big enough to pull that much plow. Thanks for the info on the plows Mike!
bork 0 #5 Posted January 2, 2010 Is a coulter, the type that has the disc in front of plow blade?
big mike 13 #6 Posted January 2, 2010 The coulter is the disc at the front. It slices down into the earth so the mold board can turn it over.
mnWHfan 47 #7 Posted January 2, 2010 My cousin's C81 pulled my 10" plow without any problems. He snagged a tree root once, but it didn't pull the motor down at all. It just spun the wheels until the tractor was hung up on the bottom of the transmission case. Dennis
