Polaris2007 4 #1 Posted December 13, 2009 Okay, so I get the C-120 all ready to start after the lengthy restoration....I turn the key, and she cranks like crazy, but won't fire. I give her a lite squirt of ether and then she comes to life.....but ony for a second. It's not getting fuel. I disconnect the fuel line at the carb and crank her. No fuel comming out. I rig up a temporary gravity fuel tank, and the ole Kohler runs like a champ......but will not pump any fuel. And yes the fuel cock on the bottom of the tank is open. I checked, and there is fuel at the fuel pump inlet, it just won't pump. It was pumping fine before I dismantled it for the restoration. So one of two things happened. Either Some membrane in the pump dried out and cracked/ripped while it sat with no fuel for a few months, or....I installed the pump wrong. Is either one of these scenarios possible? Is it possible to actually insert the pump lever into the hole in the block incorrectly, and still be able to bolt it up? Like on the wrong side of the lobe or something? I want to make sure the pump is definitely bad before I order a new one. Thanks in advance........Jon
Bow_Extreme 550 #2 Posted December 13, 2009 I don't thin it's possible to insert the pump arm into the block and get it miss aligned. you would never be able to bolt it up if that were the case. I would pull the fuel pump off and check it again. You should be able to fell a vacuum affect when plunging the arm manually.
rickv1957 74 #3 Posted December 13, 2009 I think it would be possible to get arm on wrong side of cam,Rick
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #4 Posted December 13, 2009 Did you unhook the lines from the pump during your resto? If so, are they hooked up correctly now? (inlet & outlet are marked on the pump)
Kelly 1,033 #5 Posted December 13, 2009 Yes it will bolt up on the wrong side of the cam lobe, ask me I know.
The_Tyke 0 #6 Posted December 13, 2009 I had an issue with no fuel on the Raider 14 and someone suggested placing my hand over the end of the carb whilst cranking. I got plenty of fuel through then. Worked for me. :notworthy:
sodbuster 1 #7 Posted December 14, 2009 when you reinstalled the pump, did you happen to install it upside down?? I had one with same problem. the owner did not tell me he installed pump.I fought it for quite some time!! turned the pump over and off she went!! :notworthy:
Docwheelhorse 2,740 #8 Posted December 14, 2009 You can also mount the pump UPSIDE DOWN and completly miss the cam lobe---ask me how I know that... Tony
Polaris2007 4 #9 Posted December 14, 2009 Sigh........I can't believe I installed the fuel pump UPSIDE DOWN! You guys are THE GREATEST!! If you guys hadn't asked if I might have installed it upside down, I would have bought a new pump, installed IT upside down, and been turning the air blue with profanity. This is my first small engine with a fuel pump.....I was thinking small block Chevy....fuel pump goes on with the fittings on the bottom. My Bad. I just got done with her maiden voyage....down the side of our snow covered street to my brother-in-law's in a blinding blizzard...just to show her off. I do have some drivebelt/tensioner/belt guard questions to run by you guys, but for tonight I'll just revel in the fact that she is up and running. I will post some pictures soon in my original thread about this restoration. Thanks again guys for your knowlege and insight------Jon H :notworthy:

jpmcleod 4 #12 Posted December 14, 2009 I had the same problem. Th PO had installed the fuel pump up-side down. Turned it over and runs like a champ. The only way I found out it was up side down was I took it off and hand pumped it and found the vasccum side was on the fuel flow sside. I reinstalled it right side up. Good luck on the rst of it.
