62 Snow Blower for 702

Recommended Posts

gattonde

I just located a Snow Blower for my 702. It is the 1962, ST302 or ST3072 Model. The one with the round side's. Has anyone own'd or used this on a 702. Wondering how well it works with ony a 7 HP engine. Does it work as well as the new square side model's. Any idea why Wheel Horse changed the design of there blowers after 1962.

Any info you can provide would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Dan

I have a blower for my L-107 (her 6 hp motor was replaced with a 7 hp). Blowing didn't work out really well. She could deal with 3-4 inches OK...but at that amount plowing is faster and easier. Much above that and she couldn't go slow enough with the 3 spd to avoid choking. If you had a short driveway (I don't) you might get by the first pass with a lot of clutch slipping then take less than a full bite on subsequent passes but it is not very fast. I used a blower on a C81 and she spent most of the time in low range to keep up....You figure the walk behinds had a minimum of 5 hp and they are narrower and don't have to haul us around :notworthy:

I saw that one on Craigslist too. Looked in good shape and the price was right. Good luck with it. :notworthy:

Hopefully TT will chime in... here's a couple of his shots of that style. (I hope you don't mind me borrowing a few pics TT)

Still waiting to get a digital camera Steve. I am picking up the blower tomorrow. The price was just to good, not to get it. Hope you are feeling better. I'll get around to taking pictures one day and post them then.

Not at all, Jason! :notworthy:

@ Dan:

As the pictures show, these old throwers do work - but they are sort of a P.I.T.A. to maintain compared to the newer units. The 704/ST-3072 combo you see above was merely a test and an "appreciation operation" ~ done to make me appreciate what the people in the 60's who had to use this old stuff went through, and also to make me appreciate how nice it is to do the same job with a 416H with a warm, padded seat and hydraulic lift.

I never used it in deep snow but feel that it would be up to the task as long as it wasn't forced. The same SR-64 speed reduction kit that was intended for rototiller use (or a 6 / 8 speed swap) would be an excellent tractor upgrade for using this blower.

These units use a direction-reversing gearbox to turn the CCW engine PTO in to the correct CW rotation for the auger. (same deal as the 1961 LMR-301 reel mower) Make sure that all related parts of that assembly are in good condition and it the oil is at the proper level prior to operation.

The primary chain / secondary chain deal is a bit odd too, but - along with the design of the mounting frame - it enables the thrower to raise WAY off the ground when compared to the "new" throwers.

As unbelievable as this may sound, this thrower actually runs quieter than my 1986 model does and it looks a lot cooler too!

Thanks for the info Terry, I am buying this mostly has a nice thing to have and for the price I think it's well worth it. But would like to use it in a pinch just to see how it works. It will not be my only means to blow the snow. I have a FEL on a C160 and a two stage blower that I can hook up to my C195 (had to make an offset plate for the mid mount attachment).

TT,

At least you have one of those face warmers! :notworthy: I hear that they work well with only a little maintenance!

They don't do much good when the wind shifts though! :notworthy:

For those of you wondering whether I like playing with tractors in the snow......

here's a refresher!
