Bow_Extreme 550 #1 Posted December 9, 2009 I was out working on a B-80 I picked up. I actually picked up a B-100 and a B-80 but the 100 is a parts tractor only. I was finishing up re-wiring the tractor and had one last wire to get to. The hour meter needed a new wire attached for power. Well to get to this I needed to remove the shifter plate. Well the knob needed to come off the shifter to get the plate off so I could gain access to the wiring, check the shifter boot and do some general cleaning. I was gently working the shifter knob off and low and behold the threaded end of the shaft snapped in two. I couldn't believe what just happened. I suppose it could be worse. That's a first for me. I suppose I'm going to have to cut off that section and tig weld a new section of threads back on. And to think, things were going so well. I know the B-80 isn't much of a tractor but it was a steal. chamjack 0 #2 Posted December 9, 2009 I was gently working the shifter knob off and low and behold the threaded end of the shaft snapped in two. Somehow gently and snapping a metal shaft in two just don't quite go together You must have the fore-arm strength of a grizzly bear.
Bow_Extreme 550 #3 Posted December 9, 2009 I was trying to be gentle.......Oh well just another interesting item to fix. When I get done with it you won't even know it happened. Re-assembly will require anti-seize. :notworthy:
buckrancher 2,694 #4 Posted December 9, 2009 File the end of the shaft flat and drill and tap for 3/8-16 thread use a long set screw or a piece of all thread rod use green or red lock tight in shaft hole put some grease or anti-seze in ball thread hole All better :notworthy:
rmaynard 16,292 #5 Posted December 9, 2009 Why not take the shifter off the B-100 if it's a 76 or earlier? 1977 is different.
Bow_Extreme 550 #6 Posted December 10, 2009 The B100 didn't come with a rear end. This is why I cannot use the shifter from this tractor.
rickv1957 74 #7 Posted December 10, 2009 Shifter should be easy to repair,or there should be lots of them around,Rick
Kelly 1,033 #8 Posted December 10, 2009 Why not pull the shifter and grind the end down so you can just tread the end of it?? it will be .5" shorter but you will never know
