The_Tyke 0 #1 Posted December 4, 2009 I need a new battery for my Raider 14 (European). Can anyone tell me what is the maximum capacity the starter/charger is able to keep charged? I am thinking of fitting a small winch and additional lighting in the future. Your advice is greatly appreciated. Andy T
Don1977 605 #2 Posted December 4, 2009 I have used a 450 CCA and have not had any problem with it. This was on a C-120 did not fit the battery box had it mtd. behind the transmission on a home made hitch.
pfrederi 18,696 #3 Posted December 4, 2009 I am pretty sure your raider has a 10 amp stator. Bottom line battery size is not an issue. The charging system will charge a small battery or a very very big one. Issue is how long it takes and that depends on how much you draw down the battery. If the winch you want to use takes 50 amps it will take the charging system at least 5 times the amount of time you used the winch to restore the battery and that is if you have a magneto ignition system. If you have a battery ignition system it is going to take longer as the engine is constantly using about 3 amps leaving only 7 to restore the battery. Thus if you use the winch for a minute it is going to take a little over 7 minutes for the charging system to restore the battery (7 amps for 7 minutes). However, it isn't a perfect world and there are inefficiencies and losses in the system so it will actually take longer. Bottom line if you want to use a winch or other high current draw accessory get the highest CA rated battery you can fit on the tractor...but remember you will have to leave it running at full throttle until the ammeter goes back to near 0. Practically you might want top just put her on a battery charger after use and avoid extra engine wear
