Rideawaysenior 25 #1 Posted November 21, 2009 Went to NY today while working and scored a 520. It's got about 1200 hours on it, came with a nice set of wheel weights and chains. Runs pretty nice. I was driving it around today and started to hear what sounded like an exhaust leak. Well, I found a small hole in the muffler. I figured what the heck. I got this cheap enough what's a $100.00 for a new muffler. Well, called my local dealer who is also a friend and he told me that if we were going to stay friendly that he shouldn't tell me the price. Would you believe that this muffler lists for $500.00??????? Thats more then I paid for the tractor. WOW http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh223/r...rse55200041.jpg Not the best pic, it was taken by the PO and sent to me. I'll get some cleaned up ones posted tomorrow. Rideawaysenior 25 #4 Posted November 21, 2009 Thanks Chris. The guy I got it from is a great guy. He kept his promise and did some good looking out for me. A while back, I had picked up a couple of attachments from him and eluded to the fact that I was looking for a 520 much like his. He said he would keep an eye out for me. Low and behold two years later, he rings me and says, "Jack, I've got your new 520". I was like a kid with a new Tonka truck. Even better was the look on the face of my two and a half year old daughter who saw it in the bed of my truck when I picked her up from daycare. It was priceless. I have to say, I'd bet I had the same expression as she did when I saw it in person. Grin from ear to ear with a little sinister chuckle.

Sparky-(Admin) 23,139 #11 Posted November 21, 2009 Nice score Jack. Can the hole be welded or brazed? How about that "silly putty" like muffler patch that the big chain Auto parts stores cary. Mike.......
Rideawaysenior 25 #12 Posted November 21, 2009 I have not found the hold yet but it sounds like it's coming from the rear of the muffler. I'm going to pull the muffler today and see what I can find. I was talking to a friend of mine today that is a master WH mechanic and his experience is that the gaskets between the block and muffler seem to disintegrate over time. I'm hopeful that is it. Rideawaysenior 25 #15 Posted November 24, 2009 Found the exhaust leak today (the hole I originally noticed was not the culprit). After a MINOR disagreement with the wife, I decided to go outside at 10PM and pull the muffler on this thing to find that the exaust bolt holes were stripped clean. Who would have thought that I had a 5/16th heli coil repair kit which was the perfect size sitting around. So, I drilled, tapped and set the coils, replaced the exhaust gaskets and set the muffler back. Later on today I'll fire it up and see how good of a job I did. Not for nothing, but I sure was shaking my head when I found the exhaust bolts were only 3/4in. long and that even less of that thread is what holds the muffler in place. Hardly seems enough and under engineered for the type of engine Onan is.

Bow_Extreme 550 #20 Posted November 30, 2009 Great and easy fix and yes most onans in the 520H have similar problems. I've purchased one of those $500 mufflers in the past although it seems it's gone up $100 in the last year or so. No one makes those mufflers anymore and your much better off getting a custom one made up if you ever need one in the future.
