C-101 Charging and starter

I'm getting my C-101 back in working order and ready for work. It's got the original Kohker K241AS engine that runs nicely. I have a couple of questions that hopefully someone can help with. First how does the charging system work and how do I test it. The ampmeter does't seem to be working. Next, the starter works but seems a little noisy. Can I rebuild or grease this starter or is it better to just replace it? Thanks for any advise.

if u look in the links section look at the direct link to kohler,in there u can download the service manual,it tells everything you need to check your system,and sometimes if you tear the srarter apart,clean it re grease the end it works for a whilei think that the starter service is also in the manual.
