312-8 charging problems

For the last 5 years I am the owner of the only 312-8 in the Czech Republic. There have never been any problems but now the machine is not charging the battery anymore. Starting the engine with the help of a car, it is running fine, but the battery slowly dies as it does not get any electricity from the engine.

As the 312-8 is already older and unique over here, there are no spare parts, no documentation and no workshops available. This means that I have to sort it out by myself.

For this reason I would like to ask if anyone knows where I can get documentation, a manual or the electrical scheme?

I would check with a volt meter when the engine is running to make sure that it is not charging, it could just be the battery. Go to the toro web site under homeowners and you should be able to get the wiring diagram there. You will need your model number that is located under the seat.

Specific to your electrical question, what you need is what is called the "Demystification Guide". Not a joke - it's a real reference work, very, very valuable, and free to download!!!!

Then read down to the fifth post (by T-MO), and follow his instructions. The only thing you'll need to change is to enter your own tractor model number, as Bitten has said, into the box at the Toro page. One tip: the number under your seat will look something like "2112K806". On the Toro page, enter the number with a "dash", thus: 21-12K806.

If the number is missing from under the seat and you have any idea of the age of the machine, 21-12K801 is for a 1985 312-8. 21-12K802 and 21-12K803 are both for a 1986 machine, 21-12K804 is for 1987, 21-12K805 is for 1988, and 21-12K806 is for 1989.

The demystification guide has wire colors in the wiring diagrams.

Thanks for posting this question and more importantly thank you to everyone that is responding to it. My 312-8 is currently going through the same problems. This will better equip me when I have a chance to look over mine and figure out what the problem is. You guys are great! :notworthy:

This is the Toro Product Information Center.

Type this model number into the "Enter Model Number" block: 21-12K806. After clicking on the red "Search" button, click on the red "Manuals" tab and it should give you a list. You should see the Demystification manual listed. Be prepared, even on a high speed connection, it takes a while to download those 500 plus pages.

People, what can I say? Thanks for so many reactions! Didn't expect it! I will keep you informed about progress...

As to your questions/remarks:

-Bitten: The voltmeter is completely down when the engine is running. No charging! That is the only thing we are completely sure of.

-Duff: I'd like to send you pictures and stuff as soon as I have figured out how to bring everything back to 56k. The alternative is that I send it directly to the administrator of the site and then he can do with it whatever he wants. Thx for the link!

Whfan,

the problem is solved over here. It turned out that the startmotor did not disengage when the engine was already running. The little sprocket did not return to its original position. :notworthy:

We have cleaned and greased the startmotor and now everything is fine again. :WRS: The startmotor once more becomes dynamo when the engine is running, thus charging the battery. :thumbs:

I hope your problem is now also solved. Once again thanks everybody for your feedback.

I am having the same problem so I checked the regulator putting out dc, the charging from the engine is good. The amp guage was fine first thing this morning, then after a difficult jump start it was no longer charging to the battery? Strange! I'll check out the starter as well, thanks!  Yes! It is the sarter bendix rolling along with the flywheel! This is a bit different than the K series as the starter is secured to the sump cover and looks like the fill tube must removed to access the bolts? Nice to know what is needs though!

I also found a broken stab connector inside the ignition plug, which was crucial for the charge circuit!
