A 0 would be pull start, a 5 is elect. start, if it was something diff, like a auto, it would be a 7 and all autos were elect. start, same with the 6 speeds all were elect. start. but these rules don't hold true on all tractors but most, like a 702 is a 7hp, elect. start, 1962 there are a few others that way too.

what should i look at on this machine? 1277, tires hold air and has a new battery, no hyd leaks, dosent smoke, no seat...$300 bucks. seems a bit pricy but is very close, i could drive it home. im going to take a good look at the fluids and any play in the carb, should i make sure the governer tang inside the motor is not broke, it IS the only reason im rebuilding the 301 on the charger. it comes with no attachments, but he says theres a lift on the back? might this just be the cable? how do i check to see if the generator is charging? i do not have one. what should the compression be in this motor? anything else you can think of?

i dont think it has been sitting for sale for a while, so i think if i want it i should go and look at it soon, as in hopefully tomorry, but i wont go untill im prepared to check it out fully so theres no suprises when i get it working.

thanks again for the help, im certianlly looking forward to adding this to the fleet.

The charging system is a starter-generator and has a charge lamp on the dash. At low idle speeds it should be lit to indicate rpm's are not high enough to allow the generator to charge. Mid-low revs should make the light go out . Bulbs can be burnt out , as well as the gen's regulator could be bad, both are no real big deal. Make certain that it has a correct drive belt guard for the hydro, it is a 2-model/1 year part and nearly impossible to find another one (trust me on this). Hood should be the long 7-slot with no cutout for a headlight.

Front axle/spindles are common ones and can be swapped from other long frames, no big deal there. Check the steering shaft gear teeth, they should be square-edged and not worn sharp from lack of grease/adjustment. That shaft is sort of an odd length, so that one is important unless you can weld really well. Make sure the hydro is strong both cold and hot, especially in reverse. Otherwise, just the normal wear/tear parts should be inspected.

For $300, that's not a bad price if it's fairly straight/complete.
