Steering Wheel Removal

OK, so Chris asks yet another silly question....how in the heck does this thing come off.

Is this a roll pin that needs to be hammered out? I tapped on pretty firmly, but it didn't appear to move, and I don't want to really "whack" it if that's not the way it comes out!

Not a silly question at all, Chris....and the answer is yes, that roll pin has to come out before the wheel will come off.

But that's the easy part. Unless you're lucky beyond all belief, even with the pin removed getting the wheel off may be the biggest PITA you'll encounter working on these tractors.

If you get hung up, there are a couple exellent threads here about how to work through this problem. For starters, make sure you've got a good supply of PB Blaster or other quality penetrating oil and start applying it liberally.... now.

Thanks for the quick reply Duff....already got the PB on it...added a bit more though. I'll give it some soak time, the I'll commence to whompin'!

I'll try to post some pics of my progress soon....I've taken "boo coo" photos so hopefully I can figure out how this beast goes back together!

Since it looks like you have the steering column out of the tractor, you may find this tip useful. I have a piece of 2X6 with a half circle cut out of the end, I use it to support the wheel while wailing on the roll pin. The piece of wood also has a hole drilled in the bottom of the cut-out so the roll pin has somewhere to go.

All I can say is good luck they are a P.I.T.A. but others slide off like they were new???

There is a special roll pin punch that we use at work. It has a small pin on the face of the punch that goes in that small hole and helps keep it centered. I have removed them though with a regular punch... Once out WITH the steering wheel in my 12 ton press AND alot of soaking, it didn't have a chance!!!
