'68 Charger not charging

Recommended Posts

Ok, it finally came back to it's re-birthplace for a checkup after 3 months...

No output at all on the charging system. Did the usual voltage and ohms tests and verified the stator coil is dead - showing open across both leads. I had talked to TT about this engine and thought it had an external coil and points - memory isn't too good when the thing is way across town. Turns out, it is the oddball impulse system and it is failing. Someone either put an external set of points on this engine or whatever, but it is starting to fire poorly and the charging system is dead.

So, what do we do with it now ?

Back up a year and use a starter-gen with different flywheel/engine tin/ignition switch?

Go forward a few years and use a different bearing plate/flywheel/stator/rectifier/tin ?

Here's some pics of the current system-

Like I said, it's getting very hard to start, almost like the timing is off a few degrees but the points are in good shape and set to .020" dead-on. I suspect the generator coil for the spark is going out like the charging coils .

Hope this is in the right section, if not .....I'm sure the mods can move it.

TT

Sarge - that's magneto ignition and is self-powered by the magnets in the flywheel. (just like an older B&S lawnmower engine)

Is the condenser still there? It should be bolted to the "front" of the engine near the points cover.

If it's bad that could be the source of your problem.

I can try another condensor, should have several around here. Just not real fond of the whole system and may just source a later 15 amp flywheel/stator/bearing plate.

I plan to look a bit deeper into this stator, maybe it's some simple little corner that's broken in the wire, who knows?

On a side note, installed the new points/condensor in the K321 and tuned the carb a bit , runs like a champ. Removing the exhaust nipple wasn't fun, but the sawzall cured that right quick..
