Fuel petcock

on the 1057 , tank has gravity petcock. I see in search, the replacements, but was wandering if the packing can be replaced. Is it "O" ring or graphite? The valve shuts off, & only leaks around knob when on. BTW Ace carries the "t" handle style for only around $5.00.

There's only one way to fix it. Take it off and tear it apart. It's hard to say what kind of packingis in it. I wouldn't buy a new one unless the aluminum housing is cracked , because you can still fix the old one. There not hard to work on.

Took it apart last night & was able to unsrew stem totally , as to remove from body. Cleaned out old crumbs from packing nut, but what would be a good packing material replacement? I have grafite packing twine for faucets , but dont know if fuel will break it down. Anyone now what is a suitable packing material for fuel?

Since no replies, I'm soaking the faucet packings in gasoline , to see if they degrade. Imagine the twine will be ok, but whats holding the grafite to twine? Most likely, a parafin base.(wax) I'll let you all know asap.

Some paraffin removal products are petroleum based which makes me think that it will dissolve the paraffin over time from either the gasoline and/or the detergents in the gasoline BUT if it's packed tight the swollen string may be enough to do the job even if the paraffin dissolves. If the tiny bit of paraffin on the string dissolves it will probably just burn up with the regular fuel and not harm anything (in my limited opinion).

I called NAPA & they have assortment of "O"rings for fuel. (nitrile) So I'm trying a small one that is snug on shaft. So far it is holding. I do wish the ring was fatter. I remember the "O" rings from the gas cans on the old Johnson/Evinrudes were fat. They were in the female end of the quick disconnect. Don't know if marinas still carry them.

I packed an o-ring in there tightly once. So tight, I couldn't close it. :notworthy:

I use plastic in line shutoffs anyhow.

I very gently tighten ever so slightly snug, cause if you smush the "O" ring too tight it may leak, & the edge of the body does NOT have the flair, as a packing normally does. (the flair would help it press towards the shaft when nut is tightened.) Luckily my nut had friction on it so it wont vibrate loose, or otherwise I was prepared to put some lock tight on it. BUT time will tell, the real test!
