Doubletrouble 10 #1 Posted October 26, 2009 I looked through the box of extras that came with my tractor from the PO. I found the tire chains (getting ready for winter) and noticed 2 sets, one for the back and another for the front. Should you chain the front too? I've seen most tractors with the rear chained up but not the front. Any thoughts??
nylyon-(Admin) 7,880 #2 Posted October 26, 2009 Bill, search around here there was a post a while back about putting a bicycle chain on the front tire to give extra traction. That may help.
bitten 134 #3 Posted October 26, 2009 Are you useing a blade or a blower? I know with a blade there has been times that I could have used them. If I had a set I would put them on. P.J.
Doubletrouble 10 #4 Posted October 26, 2009 I have a blower, I think I'll probably go ahead and put them on when the time comes. It just stuck me as odd when I found them. i have never seen a trtactor with tire chains on the front.
pfrederi 18,638 #5 Posted October 26, 2009 They make a big difference since our horses do not have steering brakes like farm tractors (or d-200s)
GlenPettit 1,717 #6 Posted October 26, 2009 Chains and weight on the front is a good idea if you are having any trouble with the steering in snow/ice, especially with a plow that causes the front wheels to slip sideways. Rib tires, Lug tires or Chains all have less rubber on the ground and tend to "bit" the snow/ice for much better steering than would a flat Turf tire, and having extra weight at the front will greatly help keep both the tires and the blade/thrower down. So, you just may need those chains (much better to have, than to need, especially in the Winter).
can whlvr 994 #7 Posted October 27, 2009 i used bicycle chain and it hooked up unbeileivably, but as someone did state it would roll and it did, then i put #40 roller chain and it has lasted very well and hooks up pretty good.
Gerry w 2 #8 Posted October 27, 2009 Same here on the roller chain idea, it works great! The blower that I used with my raider had those side "wings" and after a heavy snow fall the tractor would get "pulled" over to a side because of the wings. The roller chain stopped that.
