rick 255 #1 Posted October 23, 2009 I have a chance at to get a C-100 8 speed, I know the piston isn't moving and understand what that may lead to...But I like this tractor! It comes with a 42" SD deck, the rear tires are not checked and cracked, and the metal other than the seat back is straight. The range lever won't move out of low range. I know the present owner just bought it at an auction for $175, and I may have to give that to get it. It seems this model was only made two years, is it a hard to come by model? I only have three Wheel Horse tractors, I really need another, LOL. What are your thoughts? I would hate to see this tractor parted out or boogered up by Bubba.... can whlvr 994 #4 Posted October 24, 2009 it all depends on your circumstances, are there lots of horses in your area ?how much cash you have at the time, and of course how bad you want it,we all know you NEED it :scratchead:
rick 255 #5 Posted October 24, 2009 Not a lot of horses in this area, the price isn't a deal breaker....I thought of trading him my 310-8 for the C-100 and $100.00.....I think I will offer him $150.00 cool green and see how it goes.
hodge 6 #6 Posted October 24, 2009 Hey, Rick, hello to another VA collector! What kind of shape is your 310 in? I wouldn't trade it, if the C-100 can be bought for that price. Unless the 310 isn't worth keeping. Otherwise, they are hard enough to come by that I don't like getting rid of mine. The exception was my 520- I could do more with the money than I could with the tractor. Like buy 2 or 3 for the money that I had in it.
bitten 134 #7 Posted October 24, 2009 I think it would probly take more then $100 to fix the C. If your 310 is in decent shape I would keep it and try to get the C at the best price you can if you really want it. Just my thought, P.J.
rick 255 #8 Posted October 24, 2009 Hi- Hodge & Bitten, thats the conclusion I came to, keeping the 310 since it's in good shape, and just buying the C-100. Hodge- I have an 017 and an 036 Pro Stihl....if I could justify it, I would get an 046, or MS460 I guess they are now called.
rick 255 #9 Posted October 24, 2009 Mine now, for $175.00.

rick 255 #11 Posted November 29, 2009 First off, I know I owe pictures, but the digicam and I have issues right now... I took time tonight and removed the head from the C-100, took all of 5 minutes! Much to my relief, the exhaust valve is stuck. I am sure the cylinder needs a .010 clean up to make it perfect. At least the engine repair won't cost more than a new riding mower! Cody 277 #12 Posted November 29, 2009 i would free up the exhaust valve and try fireing it and or a compression test before boring it .010 you might that find that the engine is ok and not in need of rebuild, Great buy on the tractor i have a C-100 and i love it, best running and nicest mowing tractor i have
rick 255 #13 Posted November 29, 2009 My plans exactly...I squirted Kroil down the valve stem, and shot several squirts on top of the piston to help free the rings, if the are carboned up. However, while there is little to no ridge at the top of the cylinder wall, there is plenty of carbon buildup in the combustion chamber, except for about half of the piston top. That clean piston top is a sign of oil getting by.....a tear down and measurement is in the future. In the meantime, I will try to make some smoke! BTW, the valve had started moving lower in a short while.I will remove them for cleanup and lapping before I install the head. I have spare breather gaskets, and will reuse the head gasket. rickv1957 74 #14 Posted November 29, 2009 Dont sound like a bad buy to me!,Rick
rick 255 #15 Posted November 30, 2009 It wasn't a bad buy, after all. I worked on it a little today, took the deck off and was pleasantly surprised at the condition. I know one reason why the PO stopped using it, the idler pulley for the deck belt is locked up. The spindles are fairly quiet when turning by hand. It does need the gage wheels and bolts, and a set of blades. There is no rot on the deck shell, just some light surface rust. The fuel tank is said to be leaking, I see where someone tried to seal the seam with some kind of glue, but the grommet for the fuel valve was deteriorated...... The PTO needs some attention, bearings, etc. Need to repair the worn throttle shaft, clean carb and so on. The transaxle is stuck in low range, guck as Aidan (my 3 year old grandson) would say, so I will get Unidrive experience. All in all, not bad
Suburban 550 28 #16 Posted November 30, 2009 Congratulations on the tractor and good luck with it. :notworthy:
rick 255 #17 Posted December 24, 2009 This is the next project.. The Unidrive isn't stuck in low range anymore. I was rummaging around under the shifter panel, and found a finger sized stick blocking shift lever movement. I also found the handle for the choke control and stuck it back on. The engine is going to the machine shop after I remove it. While the block doesn't appear to be badly worn, the piston is, as we used to say in the dealership shop I worked at in the 60's, loose enough to swap sides. I decided since I won't be happy with a patch job, I'll just do it right the first time. A properly rebuilt Kohler is an investment!

rickv1957 74 #19 Posted December 25, 2009 Rick, sounds like you will have another tractor up and running soon! Rick
rick 255 #20 Posted December 25, 2009 I hope to have it up and running by spring, anyway! oldandred, I think this is going to be my favorite, I like the trim lines, sort of a minimalist look....no extra sheet metal, everything out where it can be seen. rick 255 #21 Posted January 31, 2010 I took advantage of the snow storm and got the C-100 up and running. The engine was bored .010 over, new valves (the exhaust valve was burned, and stuck open), overhauled the carburetor (kit, new float, and bushed the throttle shaft). My machinist did the cylinder work, did a valve job, checked the crankshaft and resized the big end of the connecting rod. I replaced the bearings in the PTO, changed the transaxle fluid and replaced the drive belt. I need to replace the front wheel bearings and put the new hubcaps on. Getting the deck squared away will be next.
bitten 134 #22 Posted January 31, 2010 Rick Sounds like you are doing it right. Bet you cant wait to take it for a spin.
rick 255 #23 Posted January 31, 2010 You got that right! I forgot to add that I cranked her up before I came in from the shop last night...today I will warm it up, adjust the carburetor, and re-torque the head bolts.
