Coadster32 793 #1 Posted October 20, 2009 Well I drove in my 854 to work today, and smoked the crap out of the starter belt doing it. I pulled the starter/generator out, and the bearings are shot in it. Few questions: 1) seems straight forward to replace the bearings, but are there any tricks or things to watch out for? 2) while I'm in there, should I replace anything else? It was in good working order. 3) I'll rope start it to get it home. Do I need the battery connected, or will I fry something? On the same note, will I get spark w/o the battery? I get out at 5pm and don't really feel much like walking. :scratchead:
Coadster32 793 #2 Posted October 20, 2009 Woohoo! Drove her home at lunch. Needed the battery for spark. Learn-as-you-go. Not too bad rope starting a K-181 (like the turn-key better though). Still looking for advice on rebuild though.
Duff 206 #3 Posted October 20, 2009 Chris, I envy you! What is your work situation that you can drive a tractor to and from work? Around here the local constabulary would be all up in arms if we tried something like that. Many's the nice. summer morning I've wanted to jump on the Horse and head for work (less than 3 miles). W9JAB 156 #4 Posted October 20, 2009 as long as you're in their check/replace the brushes and service the commutator ring. What no Mator Horse? wait for it
VinsRJ 723 #5 Posted October 20, 2009 Chris, as long as the brushes look good and the armature doesn't look burnt you should be fine with just replacing the bearing. Whether correct or not I have replaced open raced bearings with seal units without issue.
Coadster32 793 #6 Posted October 20, 2009 That mator horse just killed me!! Great job on it. Where, if needed, would be the best place to get brushes?
daemon2525 5 #7 Posted October 20, 2009 They sell start/generator rebuild kits on ebay that have the bearing and brushes together. I think the biggest difference in the kits are whether you have two bearings or one bearing and one bushing.
buckrancher 2,694 #8 Posted October 20, 2009 Chis I got a kit off e-bay. blow everything out good with a air gun and clean the commutator with some scot-brite you could also check dia.s and order them from mcmaster-carr they are just std size's if you don't need brushes
dclarke 4,078 #9 Posted October 21, 2009 chris, the numder on the bearing is 203dd for a sealed bearing. available at napa. you might want to make sure the front bearing isn't too loose in the housing. i have had to take a center punch and mark the inside so the bearing would fit better. Coadster32 793 #10 Posted October 21, 2009 Checked out Mc-master and MSC cats. Could get both bearings for about $12. I ended up ordering the E-bay rebuild kit, which comes with double sealed bearings, and brushes for less than 9 bucks! I'm sure they're not abec-but they should work just fine. Cleaned up the communtator a bit. The brushes still had life on them, but for the price, I'll replace them anyhow. Got a new cog-type belt for it also, seeing as how i smoked the belt. Thanks alot guys! :scratchead:

W9JAB 156 #12 Posted October 27, 2009 :scratchead: Well, did ya get it fixed?
Coadster32 793 #13 Posted October 27, 2009 Sorry for not getting back right away. The kit from e-bay came in on Sat., and last night (Monday) I had her back up and running! I was going to take a pic of the infected bearing for show and tell, but ran out of the house too quickly this morning. I could prob. use a new pully on the starter generator though. Worn not too smoothly. I could make one, but if I could get one cheap, I'd do it. I do notice it's a mix of metric and standard sizes. Any good suppliers, or spare parts kicking anyone?. Maybe I'll put a call out into the classifieds. Thanks again for all the responses. It was pretty straight forward to do. The kit comes with two brushes, and two sealed bearings, ready to go. Cheap for only $9.
