DanPatch 6 #1 Posted October 16, 2009 I looked at my variable speed pulley tonight. I am wondering how it comes apart. I think there should be a spring in there. The piece in the center moves freely to change the pitch of the pulley but there isn't any spring. It looks like after removing a set screw on each side it should be pressed apart. Has anyone taken one of these apart and is there anything I should know? :scratchead:
Don1977 605 #2 Posted October 16, 2009 It sound like a variable pitch pulley that is screwed together the set screws just keep it in place.
clintonnut 126 #3 Posted October 16, 2009 Hi Dan, Vari speed pulleys do not have a spring. The belt tension moves the center sheave back and forth. Charlie
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,527 #4 Posted October 17, 2009 can anyone post a close up of the grease fitting side? The shaft is tapped and a new zerk fits in the threads however I am missing the "cover" to hold the grease in. Thanks-
clintonnut 126 #5 Posted October 17, 2009 Hi, There is a grease fitting on the end with a snap ring to hold the pulley on. THATS IT. If there is too much grease it will ooze out. Charlie
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,527 #6 Posted October 17, 2009 Is there a washer between the snap ring and pulley?
clintonnut 126 #7 Posted October 17, 2009 Mine didn't have one but it might be a good idea to put a thrust washer there to prevent wear. Charlie
DanPatch 6 #8 Posted October 18, 2009 when I took the pulley off the shaft it had two thin washers on the back side and one thicker washer on the front side. The service manual for the 1955-1957 RJ35 shows a washer and snap ring on the frontside. With my pulley on the shaft with washers in place the shaft sticks out of the pulley just enough to get the snap ring in the grove on the end of the shaft. The grease fitting is screwed into the end of the shaft. My pulley has two needle bearings in it that ride on the shaft.
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,527 #9 Posted October 18, 2009 I was able to find a thrust washer and the replacement bearings from macmaster carr. I plan on putting a 5/8 thrust bearing on the inside and a new needle bearing on the inside and the outside will have a plain bearing with a flange. I may need to slightly mill the face so the snap ring fits in place. Thanks for the info guys-
