This old Kohler 7HP

Afternoon,

Seller has this about 80 miles one way away.. says doesn’t know much about it and guy he got it from used to work for an equipment rental company.
Will ask him if he can check it for compression, maybe see if he can check spark and or if it runs. But other than that. Without making drive over there in person myself.. without knowing how many hours could be on it.. any idea what these usually sell for? Anyone know what it could of most likely come off of with how the fuel tank it mounted? Seller is asking $75.00.

It is a K161-T Magneto ignition. Most likely off a pump or rototiller. Also most likely NOT rated for a WH with a PTO due to the side load. Meant for shaft-to-shaft coupling, like a pump or generator.

What do you mean by side load? Would it be rated to power WH just to drive transmission into shifting gears and nothing else?

The main drive belt on any horizontal shaft WH is a right angle side load, even though that belt is the closest to the engine block. The double groove bell style PTO on a C series ot the triple pulley on earlier models places the load out towards the end of the shaft and necessitates the use of a side-load capable angular contact ball bearing. A regular single row ball bearing will fail under heavy side load. Inline coupling the engine shaft to the load shaft, when they are truly inline and supported, there is negligable loading side-to-side. The engine in question - the K161-T, may only have the single row bearing.

Interesting.. Thank you for the information breakdown.. so if this K161-T does indeed only have the single row bearing.. as you stated that is mainly rated and intended for tiller, pump, generator.. in other terms

a non driving moving - static machine that doesn’t place other forces than a static machine would not place on the single row bearing? To better understand.. is that correct understanding of the Bearing and load differences of that K161-T compared to a K series Kohler rated for WH operation?

Yes. The other difference is that the T series MAY have a smaller and shorter output shaft size than the WH spec ones...

Ah ok.. so regarding doing a WH repower engine or a pulley swap for crankshaft .. if The need to use a Crankshaft sleeve for example.. 3/4 to 1 Inch.. if the engine crankshaft is 2 1/2 inch just for example and the sleeve is say 3 inches.. can you put pulleys on the part of sleeve that sticks pass the 2 1/2 inches of the crankshaft engine piece or would that not be able to hold the pulleys due to just the sleeve and not the secure engine mounted crankshaft piece? If makes sense.

picture: E= engine

           Shaded part- engine crankshaft.

Unshaded Box around engine crankshaft- Crankshaft sleeve adapter

acceptable and safe to use pulley on crankshaft sleeve that protrudes beyond the shorter or narrower engine mounted crankshaft ?

IMHO - using an adapter at all is not the better choice. Better to find the correct ID pulley to mate to the shaft.

The further outboard the pulley centerline is, it puts more of a "moment" on the shaft and bearing. That means it acts like a lever

So what if the new crankshaft is To short to put the same location and amount or style of pulley was on with the orignal engine .. wouldn’t only choice then be to Use crankshaft adapter?

For a working tractor a full length correct size shaft or pulley id is the way to go.

For a show and neighborhood cruiser that's never going to see an implement you would be fine using a sleeve on a slightly short shaft.

Pullstart

Regarding side load, what tractor would you stick this on?  Square hoods and round hoods with the small drive pulley didn’t have a side load PTO.

Does an impliment include the mower deck?

What would be the chances this K161-T would still have good enough condition parts to swap all the necessary parts to convert an electric K181 to recoil start? That arnt broken.. corroded or worn out beyond useable condition.

That would dress it with a starter generator, different flywheel, coil, and possibly a different crankshaft.... Worth all that?? It's up to you.
