T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,966 #1 Posted 18 hours ago When Ford brought out the 9N in 1939, the stamping dies for the hood wasn't available yet. So, the first 600 to 700 9Ns had a cast aluminum hood, but they were painted gray in the factory. The rarity of the aluminum hoods, were were prone to crack, current owners have polished the aluminum to a bright shine and leave them unpainted. The video below (not mine) shows one of these polished aluminum 9Ns. 3 4
ri702bill 13,077 #2 Posted 14 hours ago Nice! Looks to be a Flathead 4 cylinder... Polished aluminum similar to what some folks do to 701, 702 one piece gas tanks.... Some folks, not me.
davem1111 2,372 #3 Posted 12 hours ago That is sweet - my brother still has Dad's 9N, need to get him to check for aluminum but I'm pretty sure it's not aluminum. I owned an 8N for quite a few years, not a whole lot of difference between the 2 models at first glance. Wish I still had that tractor. I see these all over the place, begging for rescue, but I don't have the time or the money.
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,966 #4 Posted 5 hours ago The 8N had a lot of improvements and can be easily identified from the 9Ns and 2Ns. It's the 9Ns and 2Ns that people have a hard time identifying correctly. The 2N is often misidentified as a 9N, due to the serial numbers on both start with "9N". The 8N had a 4 speed transmission, while the 9N and 2N did not, it had factory running boards, the 9N and 2N did not, the brakes on the 8N were on the same side, the right, while the 9N and 2N had a brake pedal on both sides. The rear wheels of the 8N were dished, while the 9Ns and 2Ns weren't. The 8N had an air vent panel on the right side on the rear of the hood for the air breather, the 9N and 2N did not. There were other changes, even in the 9N production run and the 2N. Change_history_'39-'64_Ford_Tractors.pdf
