cafoose 3,846 #1 Posted October 2 Got the 520-HC vanguard swap just about completed. Still not charging. I have a new stator coming today. Old one was only putting out 4.5 VAC. Here's the build thread: I used a Jeep muffler from amazon for the stack. 4 2
ri702bill 13,067 #2 Posted October 2 Nice! Do consider adding a lower support from the engine to the underside of the elbow area of the exhaust going to that Jeep muffler. One reason is the vibrating weight, the other is snagging any overhead obstructions.... Here is what I did on my 854 when I went to a stack glasspack exhaust. 3 1

Might just be the video, but your valves sound like they need adjustment. Pretty common thing with Vanguards. They have to be adjusted as regular maintenance.
JoeM 10,267 #6 Posted October 3 I did one ten years ago and it worked great and made tons of power. 1

cafoose 3,846 #10 Posted 9 hours ago (edited) Just replaced the stator on my 520-HC Vanguard swap because it wasn't charging. One of the stator wires had insulation missing by the flywheel. After replacing, voltage was still not much more than 12 VDC. I replaced the regulator and then it jumped up to 14.03 VDC. I also adjusted the valves. They were between 0.011 and 0.014. Specs are .005. Now it runs great and the tach moves but I don't think it's accurate because of the Vanguard having only 8 poles on the stator.
