79 model d200 steers hard

steers hard. this tractor sat for a long time. I have it running & the hyds working. Any tips on where to start looking at the steering or start taking things loose till I find whats bound up?

first thing, jack the front up and turn the steering to check for mechanical binding.

My D never really steered easy unless it was moving. 

Put some extra air in the front tires and make sure the king pins have grease

Also the steering gearbox is greaseable a couple shots but don't over do it

I've never had a "D" Series, but a couple of other tractors I have use steering boxes like that.

If the steering feels a little "crunchy" the bottom ball bearings #38 are probable rusty or shot.

If the tractor sat outside, those steering boxes are prone to get water in them.  

The bearing typically has a plastic retainer that holds individual bearing balls.

You can get individual replacement balls in those gray drawers at your hardware store.

if the plastic retainer is shot, you can reassemble with heavy grease temporarly holding the balls in place.

The D series steering is from Ross...Many other tractors used that steering system.. John Deere did and you can find rebuild kits for hem ..accessing the steering on D series is not a fun project
