are the black metal panels originally gloss black or matte black ?

Mine appear to be semi gloss on the 300 and 400 series.

Just to give you an idea of the matte look, this black hood was done in matte. I think the 520 hoods had a bit more shine, like the guys said semi gloss or even gloss. Most of the old 520 hoods I have had, the paint job from the factory was chincy and rubbed though and faded.

I am just asking about metal panels on the steering tower. All of mine are faded and worn and not sure if they were originally gloss, semi or matte.

Flat or semi gloss black on the tower parts. Flat is more forgiving later if you have to touch up here and there from scratches too. The more gloss, the more blemishes will show up. 

 

Personally, flat looks better to me.
