BradKahler 387 #1 Posted Tuesday at 09:13 PM I'm in the process of swapping the 3-speed from my 1966 656 with an 8-speed from a Raider 8. After reviewing the parts list I've come to the conclusion that the only part that is different for the brake/clutch mechanism is the rod from the pivot to the brake band. The 656 uses rod # 3935 and the Raider 8 uses rod # 9599. According the the picture in the parts book the 9599 rod has a kink in it. I've got a rod # 103538 that looks very similar to the 9599 rod but it's a mirror image. Unfortunately pictures don't provide dimensions and angles so what I'm hoping for is someone can possibly take some pictures from their 72-74 Raider 8, Raider 10, Commando 800, or 73 8 HP 8-speed, or 10 HP 8-speed. With pictures and dimensions I should have no trouble making a useable facsimile of 9599. Thanks!!
ebinmaine 80,014 #2 Posted Wednesday at 12:28 AM Brad are you adding a second pedal? The 3 speed tractors all had a single pedal. I believe all the 8 speed tractors had two pedals. That'll cause an issue with linkage. 2
ri702bill 12,670 #3 Posted Wednesday at 08:44 AM Not an issue using the correct Raider brake rod. I did the 8 speed swap on my 854. Only thing I gave up on was the parking brake hookup (1st gear in Low Range works about as well)

I believe all the 8 speed tractors had two pedals. That'll cause an issue with linkage. I'm not currently planning on adding a second pedal. From what I've found in the documentation for a Raider 8 and Raider 10 is they were equipped with the 5086 transmission which has 1" axles and is an 8-speed. After comparing the parts breakdown of a Raider 10 with my 656 the only difference in the linkage is one brake rod. The Raider 10 brake rod is part # 9599 and the 656 uses a # 3935. The difference is the 3935 is straight and the 9599 has a kink in it of around 30 degrees to account for the actuation point being above the drum instead of below. The picture below shows a Raider 10 with the 9599. The parts breakdown picture is from a Raider 10 manual. I've purchased a 103538 rod that is used on the B100 8-speed tractors. The shallow bend is in the wrong direction but I'm hoping I can bend it the other direction. Based on what I've found by searching the forum is the rod is to long so I'll have to add threads and shorten the rod. 103538 should arrive today so I should know if I'm on the right path by the end of the day

I didn't see your response until today, I keep forgetting to click "notify me of replies" I tried searching for the 9599 rod from a Raider 10 but had no success.
