Duvall 0 #2 Posted October 11, 2009 I get most of my hardware from McMaster Carr. Sometimes there is minimum order qty. If I only need a couple, I get them from a local hardware. http://www.mcmaster.com/# Not sure on the S.T. bolt. Where is it used?

Rollerman 290 #4 Posted October 11, 2009 If your looking for stainless steal fastners they can be found at a lot of places....just don't get caught. I get some SS hardware at TSC, Lowes or Menards. Kinda pricey since you only get a few peices per package & the selection in small. S.T. may be an abbreviation for standard thread?

buckrancher 2,694 #6 Posted October 11, 2009 do you have a local fastenal store?
rick 255 #7 Posted October 11, 2009 We use stainLESS fasteners at work, along with Nylock nuts. I have found them easier to wring off, than regular Grade 5 bolts. I would pay a small premium for stainless in a Grade 5 fastener....
MikesRJ 558 #8 Posted October 11, 2009 These folks, Marsh Fasteners, Are pretty reasonably priced and you can purchase box quantities online. $20 minimum order which equates to a single box of 100 S/S 1/4-20 x 3/8" socket head bolts.
HorseFixer 2,013 #9 Posted October 11, 2009 PJ what kind of Bolt houses are near you? I buy mine from my local nut and bolt wholesale house. Many times I buy them by the box if they are a common size most especially the Nuts and Washers being I have alot of Tractors in the on deck circle it will pay in the long run. BOLT SCIENCE is a good site that has good information on Nuts and Bolts.

Gene_S 93 #11 Posted October 11, 2009 Fastenal is the place if you ask me. I got stainless bolts that match the bolts that hold the belt guards. They will beat the heck out of Lowes and Menards prices hands down! Thanks, Gene :scratchead:

Polaris2007 4 #13 Posted October 12, 2009 Make sure you get 316 stainless fastners, and not 18-8 sytainless. Just about all stainless fasteners that you buy at the big box stores or your local hardware store are 18-8 stainless, and will rust over time. 316 stainless is significantly more corrosion resistant, and a little stronger than 18-8 stainless. You can get 316 stainless at McMaster-Carr, MSC, Fastenal, KL Jack Etc. You can tell the difference between an 18-8 stainless bolt and a 316 stainless bolt with a good magnet...like one of those telescoping magnetic pick up tools. Touch it to the bolt...if you feel any magnetism at all, even a little, it is not 316, and most likely it is 18-8. Also keep in mind that 18-8 and 316 stainless steels are not as strong as grade 5 bolts...they have only slightly more tensile strength than grade 2 steel bolts. But they are plenty strong enough for everywhere on your Wheel Horse except the frame to transmission bolts and the engine mount bolts. I am using 316 stainless everywhere except for those two places on my C-120. If anyone has any questions about fasteners and alloys, ask away. I am a yacht builder, and I have to deal with different grades and alloys of fasteners every day. Currently, we are using grade 5 Titanium 16mm diameter bolts to the tune of about $200.00 a pop to bolt down the three 1,550hp diesels in our current project.
