illinilefttackle 399 #1 Posted February 16, 2008  I was plowing today-not really pushing it-then in between stoping, raising the blade-the engine started sounding funny-spitting sound from the exhaust-then a large cloud of black smoke-and then it quit. I expected the worst-and got help to push it back to the garage. I checked the oil-ok- turned the engine over by hand-no noises- then tried to start it-it fired right up ran ok- Whats up I didn;t look at the plug yet-but my exhaust pipe tip has always been black-almost like too rich a mixture-but this engine uses oil too. Any ideas? How do I set the idle&high speed mixtures? Thanks-AL
nylyon-(Admin) 7,845 #2 Posted February 16, 2008 It's possible you had some water in the fuel. If that were the case it may happen again until the water is worked out of the system.
TT-(Moderator) 1,160 #3 Posted February 16, 2008 Or.... It may have "ingested" some dirt in to the fuel system, Al. Chances are, a little dirt got under the float needle in the carburetor, and allowed excess gas to enter the float bowl. The fuel level rose above the normal level and flooded the orifices within the bowl cavity. This is basically the same as throwing the choke on the whole way on a running warmed-up engine. If you don't have an inline fuel filter, it wouldn't hurt to install one. Another thing to watch for in the winter months is air cleaner icing. (when ice builds up on the outside of the air filter and effectively "chokes" off the supply of air to the engine. -- this is more typical when using a snowthrower/blower) Here's the carburetor adjustment information from the Kohler service manual:
whchris 5 #4 Posted February 16, 2008 my 702 does that occasionally i believe the intake valve gets hung up for a second and it floods what year is your tractor its very possible you may need(should) to add a lead substitute to keep everything lubed up mostly by the 80's kohler had everything off the lead unless its another brand engine if its a tech. it could be anything
TT-(Moderator) 1,160 #5 Posted February 16, 2008 He has a 1981 C-125 automatic, Chris. It does have the hardened exhaust valve seat, but they still like a little lead to lube the valve stems.
illinilefttackle 399 #6 Posted February 16, 2008  Thanks Guys for the info and charts- I added a little "sea foam" to the tank and filled it up with gas. The tank was low-and I had just added the rest of the gas from the can-before I plowed-it might have had some water in it. Thanks for the jet settings and procedures- I'll try them tomorrow after work. If I get into trouble-Tickster is coming by this sunday with a plow-maybe he good listen to it! -AL I'll watch that air filter icing too-I had never heard of that!
