hotajax 275 #1 Posted 21 hours ago (edited) Tractor wouldn't start. I jumped the two terminals on the solenoid with a screwdriver, and it worked. So I found a solenoid in my collection with the two terminals oriented side-by-side instead of Up-and-down like the OEM solenoid was. Tractor still won't run. What is the smaller gauge wire that goes to the battery side of the solenoid? What is the smaller gauge wire that is closest to the bottom of the solenoid? Also, on a side by side orientation, which side is the battery side and which is the solenoid size? Any tips would be great...thanks. Also, have you had any luck with amazon solenoids ( read between the lines = fast delivery ). Edited 21 hours ago by hotajax
squonk 47,215 #2 Posted 21 hours ago The small wire is the feed from the key switch. It supplies power to the solenoid coil so it will pull the contacts closed that connect the battery cable to the starter cable. If you don't have power at that small wire when the key is in start, a thousand solenoids won't fix it. Make sure your PTO lever is fully closed.

One that was attached to the battery side of the solenoid, and another spade connector near the bottom of the solenoid. So are there two feed wires from the key switch?
hotajax 275 #5 Posted 20 hours ago Thank you. But which side of the larger terminals is the battery side, and which is for the starter side? Another way to ask this is how does the current flow when the key is turned to start? And on the smaller terminals, which side is the ground, and which side is the S terminal? Thanks in advance. 953 nut 67,175 #6 Posted 20 hours ago These solenoids are not polarity sensitive, use either big terminal for the battery and the other to the starter. Likewise either small terminal can be grounded and the other one goes to the wiring harness. 1

Much appreciated.
ri702bill 12,367 #8 Posted 10 hours ago Yup, run both set of wires so that it is tidy and the cable from the solenoid to the starter be as short in length as feasably possible.
