Spindle

Hi, I need some help finding a solution for the spindle housings on my Wheel Horse.

The tractor is a 1976 Wheel Horse C-120 Automatic, model 1-0481, with a 48” side discharge mower deck.

The original spindle housings are getting worn out and soon I won’t be able to keep them alive anymore. I would like to replace them with new parts if possible.

Does anyone know if there is an aftermarket or newly manufactured spindle housing that fits this deck? It does not have to be a Wheel Horse part, as long as it fits and works.

I have attached pictures of the mower deck and the parts diagram. Any help or experience would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to Red Square.

In your search look for spindles that will use blades with a round hole. The Wheel Horse later used blades with a 3/4" center hole which are very common and easily available.

The blades with the double-D 5/8" x 3/4" center hole like yours are next to imposable to find.

There are many small pieces also required to change to the new style spindle assemblies.

I wonder if you could bore out the original pulleys to fit the spindle shaft. The pulleys are secured by a regular lock washer and standard nut. There is no key and the direction of rotation keeps the nut tight. It may not work because the upper spindle pulley end should be metric.

Blades, blade washers and nuts also required.

I don't know how easy it will be for you to pull this off from your location.

This 42" is what you would aim for

It looks like a 42" width of cut with 3 blades?

These 42" side discharge decks all use blades with 5/8" x 3/4" double-D center hole unless the spindles have been upgraded.

Reread your posts and you stated it is a 48" deck. That means the rear cut height adjuster is on the left side if you are sitting in the seat. 42" it is on the right side.
