D160 Onan 16 hp needs quality OEM points

1980 D160  Onan 16hp. Looking for quality points that are not cheap plastic. Mine uses the generator style points 160-1154. 2 sets later and the screw to mount condensor and coil wire will not tighten, just spins.

I recently got this tractor and the points were burned in half when I pulled the cover plate. Coil ohms are 3.7ohms and 20k ohms across spark plug holes. 20k seems high as per spec. It has a ballast resisitor mounted between points and coil. Will these be a problem causing the points to burn in half ?

I have not started or checked for spark yet , waiting to get quality points. Engine is on the bench set up with battery and start solenoid. Ive cranked engine alot to check other things without coil hooked up and points are operating by the pushrod and maintaing .021 gap, but the loose wires on coil are stopping me at this point.

The points and condenser need to be mounted properly so the points don’t burn.  Check your wiring diagram to see if the resistor is to be in use at all times except during starting.

Is the coil the original Onan?  Are you using the Onan Manual to troubleshoot the issue?  Can you install a Heli-coil to repair the threads?

Its the tiny screw on top of the points that holds the 2 wires. It screws into the plastic housing of the cheap points. Looking to replace with quality or OEM points that have a phenolic, not plastic arm. Need an OEM part number or better option.

The coil appears to be newer, probably not Onan.

I have the ONAN service manual and D series owners manual, but not a parts manual. Spec for coil is 12.5 - 15.4 kohms at secondary. Im reading correct spec on primary, but secondary is 20k. This may be why previous owner installed the resistor ? Resistor looks new.
