Fj40z 95 #1 Posted 22 hours ago My father in law has his old 582 that hasn’t ran in close to 20 years. Said I could have it if I wanted to do try and get it back going again. I’ve checked the serial numbers and it’s a pre MTD so still all IH made. He said a gear had stripped in the motor but I wasn’t too sure of what he was talking about. I’m green on Wheel Horses and even greener on Cub stuff. I’m sure it’s built like a tank but what’s the general consensus on these from the more well informed?
Achto 31,885 #2 Posted 22 hours ago (edited) Generally a model that Cub Cadet collectors look for. They are built like a tank. Better that it is 582 and not a 582s. The 582s had a cheaper transmission. Edited 22 hours ago by Achto

The thing that concerns me the most is I’ve read that twin cylinder Briggs can be problematic and a lot of 582 owners end up swapping motors. Not sure my skill set will allow that. Sure I could figure it out eventually but not enough time for a project like that.

Honestly an easy repair with still available parts. There is how ever the failures due to neglect
Fj40z 95 #5 Posted 18 hours ago (edited) Good to know! Makes me not as hesitant about sticking with the original motor. He said it ran strong before it had an issue. Edited 18 hours ago by Fj40z
