Fj40z 105 #1 Posted Saturday at 09:06 PM My father in law has his old 582 that hasn’t ran in close to 20 years. Said I could have it if I wanted to do try and get it back going again. I’ve checked the serial numbers and it’s a pre MTD so still all IH made. He said a gear had stripped in the motor but I wasn’t too sure of what he was talking about. I’m green on Wheel Horses and even greener on Cub stuff. I’m sure it’s built like a tank but what’s the general consensus on these from the more well informed?
Achto 31,891 #2 Posted Saturday at 09:10 PM (edited) Generally a model that Cub Cadet collectors look for. They are built like a tank. Better that it is 582 and not a 582s. The 582s had a cheaper transmission. Edited Saturday at 09:12 PM by Achto

The thing that concerns me the most is I’ve read that twin cylinder Briggs can be problematic and a lot of 582 owners end up swapping motors. Not sure my skill set will allow that. Sure I could figure it out eventually but not enough time for a project like that.

Honestly an easy repair with still available parts. There is how ever the failures due to neglect
Fj40z 105 #5 Posted Sunday at 12:19 AM (edited) Good to know! Makes me not as hesitant about sticking with the original motor. He said it ran strong before it had an issue. Edited Sunday at 12:19 AM by Fj40z
