Using rattle can from TSC, what is best to wipe down and clean with before painting?

Keith, I've had good luck pre-wiping everything with Acetone. However, if you are going to paint over existing paint, use it sparingly - it can soften up the old paint.

I use it because of all the solvents (although I'll admit my experience isn't the greatest in the world...), it's less toxic than most, readily available and not terribly expensive.

I'm sure others with more experience in painting and bodywork will chime in here, and I would defer to their judgment.

I talked to the head of our finish dept. at work about this same question. He said I would get equal results with acetone and laquer thinner, followed closely by denatured alcohol. I have been wiping bare metal for the most part, using acetone with excellent results. +1 on using it sparingly over old paint. It DOES soften it. I think if I were going to wipe down old paint, I would use denatured alcohol.
