Solenoid

I have a B100. The identification tag is a little beat up so I used a fine tipped magic marker and wrote down what I could using a magnifying glass. But the other matter is this doesn’t have an original solenoid. It’s definitely an aftermarket. Looking for the original part number I looked for a good hour yesterday. I couldn’t seem to find it in the manual section. Is it grouped with other tractors and years? Any info would help.  This what I have on it now.

I thought that tractor runs good?

 

If that solenoid works I'd leave it on.

 

But that main ground cable should NOT be attached to the bracket.  

Ground cables should be bolted to a more substantial point. Sheet metal isn't a great path for electricity.

Solenoid part number is 8658. We do not have an original illustrated parts list and the one at Toro is list only - no illustrations. The Toro Master Parts Viewer allows one to word search and "solenoid" produced the 8658 part number. Click on the solenoid in the link.

Napa ST81SB  Use the "s terminal.  Dis-regard the 2nd terminal.

Well yesterday I had a slight accident with that extra top wire that I don’t need slipped out of my hand and fell onto the positive side of the battery. Quite the spark show so I am thinking that something happened to that solenoid, cause it doesn’t turn over the engine anymore and yes, I did put my foot on the clutch to activate the safety switch kind of a head scratcher. So I only hear  a nock sound coming from the solenoid. Does not turn over engine.

Kinda sounds to me like the knock you hear is the solenoid working but there another issue with the starter, bad wiring or?

If you contacted the battery and solenoid directly that safety switch is out of the circuit.  Doesn't matter.

Agreed.  

Could be a bad ground. ..or other bad components.  

 

Proper diagnosis here will be the key.

Got any fuses in the wire from the solenoid to the amp meter? Could have blown one while the spark show was going on.

About the ID tag, some times when they are hard to read, take a lead pencil and rub the numbers then lightly rub it off. The lead will fill the numbers and make it easier to see.

If not, time to add one in a weather resistant holder.... all of mine get one.

Connect a jumper cable to the starter side of the solenoid.   Then touch it to the + battery post.   If it turns over, the starter is OK.
