PbFlinger 69 #1 Posted 14 hours ago This is the second one of these mufflers that I’ve had on this tractor. I will admit that the first was mounted a little indifferently. However I carefully mounted this one, made a sturdy support bracket, and made sure it was stress free. It cracked away in the same place. My detailed engineering analysis is that they’re made of crap metal that’s way too thin.
PbFlinger 69 #2 Posted 13 hours ago Decided to go with a regular old pot muffler. Should be easy enough- all 1” pipe. However, my original elbow is in great shape, and has decided that it is quite happy where it’s at Tried all the usual non-nuclear removal tricks. Not willing to chance destroying a valuable elbow, or worse the block, over a muffler change. Decided to build on the foundation I have.
PbFlinger 69 #3 Posted 13 hours ago Found 1-1/4” pipe to have about same ID as the OD of the elbow (1-3/8”). Cut a piece to length, and split the end a bit to hopefully allow enough springery action for a muffler clamp to work.
PbFlinger 69 #4 Posted 13 hours ago The whole mess in the end. How can something this simple take an entire afternoon and $50? I won’t be sure it works until tomorrow. I have a deed restriction on my property that prohibits ever having the correct size hardware or clamps on hand, so I’ll have to run to town & look for a 1- 5/8” muffler clamp. Will advise. Everybody have a great holiday weekend! 1
adsm08 4,440 #5 Posted 12 hours ago Simple things are the worst. I've had jobs that would take me 20 minutes at work take all day at home. And $50 just isn't that much anymore.
JCM 11,151 #6 Posted 10 hours ago Bought this 312 new in 89. Same exhaust, garage kept.
MainelyWheelhorse 2,551 #7 Posted 4 hours ago I’m the third owner of my 92 312. It was mostly garage kept too and has the original exhaust. I just gave it a refresh and did maintenance.
PbFlinger 69 #8 Posted 56 minutes ago I have another 312-8 that has the original muffler on it, that I keep at a different property. I’ve had it for 18 years, and used it about 5 hours a week for most of that time. The original muffler on it is still in fine shape. When I got this one it had some glommed up exhaust on it that worked well enough & lasted about 10 years. It finally fell apart, and that’s when I went with the aftermarket units. I would prefer to put an original muffler on it, but they’re scarce & expensive. Original idea was to mount the aftermarket one horizontally like the original, but that wouldn’t work without some fab work that I just didn’t have time for. I mounted these vertically. Both lasted maybe 10 hours, if that.
PbFlinger 69 #9 Posted 34 minutes ago PS- those are both nice tractors! These are great machines. This one is probably a 1986 or so, (stickers are gone, and I don’t remember researching it). It’s breaker ignition, which I haven’t touched since I tuned it up probably 10 years ago. It was a non running heap when I got it. The other is a late 90’s that I bought from the dealership that sold it new (trade in). I’m the second owner, it had about 200 hours on it when I bought it.
