Auction Surprise

Unexpectedly won this horse at auction a couple weeks age just got her home.  It was in the non running section but I saw the hydro lift and figured parts for that alone would be worth something but figured someone else would see that also.  They didn't and I won. $60.   Hydro gear plus lift I figured it was hacked up Charger Electro.  Turn out it is a short frame1965-77 Wheelamatic.  But I don't believe hydro lift was even an option for those.  Then there is the deck.  I have never seen one like this before.  It is I believe a complete and in good shape RM425 a 42 inch deck for short frames.  The mechanism looks rube goldberg but based on a picture I saw seems to be complete.  When I thought it was a long frame, I had a K301 I would put in it and if the hydro worked sell it.  But she really needs a small base big block S/G  which I don't have.

That is quite a potent combo. All the short-frame benefits plus hydro motion and lift as well as a 42” cut. How much of that do you think is PO modifications?

 

I see a left-side pedal but I thought the early Sunstrand models didn’t have separate brakes (and of course, no clutch)?! Could that be a later Sunstrand swapped in?

The B&S IC line were very competent and reliable engines.

Yeah, the tortured mower belt path can raise some eyebrows--isn't this the deck model that required the six-sided belt? It looks like it had some sort of bagger attached in a past life, as well.

 The only thing that the peddle does is return the motion lever to center.

Peeling the mystery like an onion. Uncovered her data plate she was born an 875.  If that was the original deck they were optimistic..8hp for a hydro and a 42 inch deck...

 

Definitely a Wheelamatic Sunstrand 3100077.  Tow valve is hex head on the back if the pump up against the tool box.  Also the motion control linkage is Wheelamatic vintage just two little springs to provide friction for the motion control slider.

 

Deck belt is a standard 139 in.  The twin matched set belts engine to deck are different from the ones used on 32 and 36" decks.  WH 5950 28.4"

The Exchange lists the RM-425 as compatible with the 875, but I agree it would have really taxed a K181 if the grass was heavy.

What HP is the B&S that’s on there?

At the Big Show, I'm getting one of those decks from @Achto and I'm planning on putting it on my 854, keeping up on the grass and everything I am pretty sure it'll be fine since it won't be like we are mowing fields once a month.

Looks like quite a power loss thru that menagerie of pulleys and belts.

The Wheel a Matics used the left pedal as an emergency stop (brake) by returning the trans to neutral. Just like the later Sunnies and Eatons

Paul did the past owner do any cutting of the hood? If not that would be a good candidate to bring back to original. I hope you can find an engine for it.

He cut it o clear B&S air filter and drilled a bunch of holes for some head lights

Got a Raider 12 thats missing a bunch of stuff so Im probably gonna part it out. Was told the 12hp Kohler was rebuilt?? It turns over by hand & appears to have compression. Got it in Dec & its been sitting under a cover outside so I've done nothing to it. If interested in motor lmk.
