Well oops I did it again!

Picked this up today. Runs ok at about half choke but is clearing up so may just be bad fuel. But a carb cleaning will still come. This is the only picture you get today. More to come tommorow.

That would have been a good addition to this thread:

Here it is!

It’s a little rough in some spots. So some spots will get repainted. It runs ok on half choke so a carb cleaning and drain the old gas is coming for this. The previous owner said this engine was replaced? I’m not familiar with these engines so maybe someone else will chime in on that. There’s 1488 on the hour meter but haven’t ran it enough to see if that works. The hydro needs an adjustment as the lever is really loose. The deck has some

patches but I do have a 48” that I can put on this.

KT17 Series are a good engine.  The engine data is on the small plate I circled.  Clean it carefully the number rub off easily.  With spec and serial number we can see if it is newer.

Muffler should be chrome on a 417. And a chrome cover on a 418. The muffler exit can be either straight out the middle on the 417 or out the front end. Yours may have been chrome when new. Looks like a 1985.  A true BEAST either way. Terry Dennis can make a new engine I.D. sticker for you.

Kohler made serial 14235814 in 1984 so if original to the tractor it would be a 1985 model 31-17KE01.

That is the original spec number so I doubt this is a replacement engine.

Series 2 are good engines...

Well finally today I got around to working on the 417.

First I drained all the old gas out and replaced the fuel filter. Then took the carb off and cleaned it. And once the system primed it fired right up! I drove it around for a little while to get the oil nice and hot and changed that. I also greased it and adjusted the motion control cam plate. I gave it a quick bath and degreasing. I think when I washed it even though I was careful I got some water in the points so I got no spark now. But tommorow I’ll pop the points cover off then give them a quick cleaning.

And we are back!

Took the points cover off and they were filthy. So I gave them a good cleaning and adjusted them as they were way off. Put it all back together and it fired right up! I put 40 minutes on the hour meter and she’s good! This will be a dedicated “mowing” and will also be pulling my cyclone rake tractor so stay tuned for that post!
And the headlights work!

Also I was just wondering if these engines have an oil pump. I didn’t see any filter so I’m not sure.

KT -17 series 2 had oil pumps...WH decided not to get the oil filter.  You can retro fit one if you find the parts

That's a nice tractor and will serve you well.  Even the series 1 have the oil pump, it just doesn't feed the rod journals as the cranks weren't drilled. Instead they have 2 holes in the cam (the're hollow and feed the main bearing on the other side of the case) to spray oil "towards" the rods. I think your series 2 has more in common with a magnum, than it does a series 1.

The filter would sit between the rear cylinder and the belt guard. You should have an aluminum rectangle with 2 1/4-20 allen headed bolts, thats the delete plate where it goes.  If you add a filter, it's not easy to access so plan some extra time on your oil changes. You will also have to change the shroud on that head. Theres 3 styles. Yours should be the long style it may or may not have 2 punched holes with plugs,  it won't fit over a filter. The long ones that have the round cut out (like an onan) are hard to find. You can use the short one, but it doesnt meet up and support the shrouding by your exhaust. Cubs used a remote filter that has steel tubes to fit the 2 holes punched but then run into the battery tray. So the remote would require making some lines and there is no good place to put it. I guess what I'm saying is everything is a compromise.

I put a filter on my 418 & I have to pull the belt and guard to change it. I used the short head baffle, so I'm missing the shroud on the pto side, it's pretty important because it holds the stuff that supports the muffler sheild.

Sorry that got so long.
