brentonkjohnson 0 #1 Posted October 2, 2009 I just looked at a 1974 D-160. The engine was just overhauled and sounds great. The rearend was leaking so the gentlman bought a rebuilt one but has not installed it yet. The tractor is on stands with the two rearends next to it. He is selling it for $550. He has never driven it as it was leaking when he purchased it and he wanted to fix it before he drove it. I reluctantly said no on the basis of him not having driven it. I guess I'm just a little nervous about the hydrostatic transmission as I know they are expensive to repair. This sounds like a pretty risky deal, however it's not that big of an initial investment for a D series in my opinion. I thought about going back and offering $400. What are your thoughts? Thanks, Brent Johnson P.S. Thanks for such a warm welcome to the forum, you guys have been extremely helpful.
Kelly 1,033 #2 Posted October 2, 2009 I'd offer the $400 he can only say no, if you don't you might kick your self for not asking, heck the engine is worth most of that, if it's a twin.
brentonkjohnson 0 #3 Posted October 2, 2009 It's the original Kohler single cylinder. I think that engine was only offered in the 1974 D-160 then they went to the Onan twin midway 1975. I think I saw that posted somewhere on here.
d180man 5 #4 Posted October 2, 2009 Hi we like to see and here them run and move! and try them on hills! :hide:
jpmcleod 4 #5 Posted October 2, 2009 I have bought several tractors thaqt were not running when I purchased them. Took a chance and came out all right. If you can swap out the rear-end yourself, you might have a good deal. I just bought a new stator for one of mine and it cost a good amount but the tractor is worth it. Like it has been said, the engine is almost worth that if it runs. The other is all elementary. If it has good rubber, belts, and only surfact rust, I would take the chance. Someone else will grab it up and then you will see it all restored and wish you had bought it. We only gom through life one time, and we have to take chances. I say go for it for. bitten 134 #6 Posted October 3, 2009 Brent Just how bad do you want it? If you can get it without useing money for the kids lunches go for it. You can always part it out and get your money back if it doesnt work out for you. On the other hand if you are looking for something to work right now it may not be the tractor for you. Let us know what you do and good luck. P.J.
perry 82 #7 Posted October 5, 2009 is that the one 4-sale in MI ?. it recently had a loader on it if its the same one im thinking of .
brentonkjohnson 0 #8 Posted October 5, 2009 Yeah, it's in the macomb/detroit area. He must have sold off the loader already? Do you happen to know how the tranny was the last time you saw it? That is a real nice 1277 you have in your profile by the way!
WheelHorse_of_course 99 #9 Posted October 5, 2009 Brenton, I think he's asking a fair price. I would probably go ahead and offer 400 and see what he says. But I'd probably go ahead and buy it for 500 if he won't come down. Does it have a deck or other implements? oes it have the 3 point hitch? Best of luck. :scratchead:
brentonkjohnson 0 #10 Posted October 5, 2009 It has nothing with it. That's somewhat why I'm hesitant as well. Even if I fix it up and it runs great I can't use it because there is no deck, no hitch, or implements. I've been looking for stuff for it but haven't found anything yet. Implements for the D series are hard to come by and expensive. Are you looking specifically for a D series? If not it is a lot easier to find C series machines, parts, and implements. Good Luck :scratchead:
brentonkjohnson 0 #12 Posted October 5, 2009 No, I'd be happy with a C or even a raider...preferably a gear drive. That D just happened to be close by. The option of the 3 pt IS a plus but if the 3 pt for it is this hard to find then that option isn't so appealing.
