Prostate good news

For years  the doctor has  been keeping eye on my PSA which at last test was 16.7.  (Quite some time ago, doctor removed me from medicine (Finasteride) that I had been taking because the medicine artificially lowers PSA.)  I just finished my 5th prostate biopsy.  He took 18 snips focusing on three  lesions  that the MRI found.    He just called and reported no cancer and wait 9 months before another prostate test.

Great news, glad things came back negative.

We are having a lot more testing over here since celebrity folk came forward with prostate cancer diagnoses and pit the disease in the spotlight. Even king Charles is suspected of having PCa although he has not confirmed it in public.

So a lot more men are going through testing, which is kind of a double edge sword.... a lot of worry and stress to find that nothing is wrong for the majority.  But also life saving for those who catch it in time. 

Im 60 and my raised psa came back as no cancer found on the two areas they biopsied on my prostate.  My brother is 63, his raised psa came back as a very aggressive, castrate resistant cancer that had already spread to his bones and is likely to kill him pretty soon.  Two very different outcomes for close blood relatives. 

Me, I'd get tested as soon as I possibly could every time. But I have a friend who flatly refuses to go for any medical tests preferring to remain ignorant of any possible problems. I dont understand his point of view, but he is entitled to do as he pleases, it's his life after all.

Not to derail the thread, but as I’ve aged I’ve come to realize that it is only partly my life. 

I firmly believe that when I let people invest in a friendship with me, when I married, and when I had children, I gave away (quite willingly and knowingly) parts of my life.

I know and accept, as well, that others’ may not share this conviction.

I'm very glad for your results were negative. I've been getting PSA test every year for probably 35 years. It was always around 2.0. Last summer it raised to 7.85 and the DR. said I would have to get a biopsy. My results showed My prostate was full of very aggressive cancer. ( Gleason 9 score )The Dr. then ordered a PSA pet scan also a cat scan and a MRI. The best they could tell the cancer had not spread so then I started hormone treatments and a few weeks later radiation treatments. The combination of treatments has completely kicked my butt. I have finished the radiation treatments but still taking the hormone treatments. My PSA is now 0.01. I will get PSA test every 4 months and if the PSA  goes up I have to get more scans to check for more cancer. I'm 80 years old and I had already started slowing down but now I get very tired doing just small things. Guys if you don't already get your PSA checked on a regular basis this stuff is no joke.   P.S.  I could sure use your prayers.

I have had one friend die and another’s life radically altered due to this insidious cancer.

For me it was a moderately high PSA and my PCP demanding a biopsy.

Nasty Gleason result.

Opted for robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery as best option for me (there are many options--choose thoughtfully). 

Post-surgery pathology report confirmed no spread but also confirmed that left untreated it would almost certainly have gotten out of control within a few months and killed me in a few years. Sobering.
