gwgdog66 23 #26 Posted October 9, 2009 i know that the bottom set of number are supposedly be the julian date the tractor was manufactured . but how can we have a vin number that starting with a number 21 from the 1985-1989, and a julian date code of 0294 being make in oct of 1980. the starting vin should start with a 01 number and not a 21 number 01-1xx80x. help me figure this out. I can't guarentee it starts with a 21. Those are just the digits I can make out on the first line, could be middle or ending numbers. The data plate has been scratched very badly. The 0294 is very clear on the second line.
Don1977 605 #27 Posted October 9, 2009 Mike, The second line serial number is 0294, I seen in the post you made on the 105 that this is the build date. Terry, It's a 1980, built on or about 21 October, the engine and fender must have been replaced. Please explain how you got Oct. the 21th. out of that number., and what is the 4 on the end for. tgranthamfd 29 #28 Posted October 9, 2009 Ok, On the top number, on the tag, the numbers you can make out are 21130. Not sure if any dashes are there or not, but they are on the right side like they are ending numbers. As far as the bottom numbers, 0294 guess the first is the year of manufacture?? and the 294 is the Julian date, from the earlier replies, this number converts to October, 21st. I no nothing about the julian dates and found a converter from an online search with google, that is where the 21st of October came into play. I just wish there were some tell tell signs to tell if it was a 81, 105, 125, 145, or a C165. According to the Master Parts Viewer all of these were avalible in 1980 with an 8 speed. tgranthamfd 29 #29 Posted October 9, 2009 Just for 1980 was a Leap Year, so 294 would be October 20th. :hide:

dgjks6 8 #31 Posted October 9, 2009 This may have been said already, I got confused reading through this post, but that's OK. It happens often to me. Anyway, the 1980-84 C's had plastic seat pans. In 1983 and 84 you could get a metal seat pan. My guess is this tractor came with a plastic seat pan and it cracked and was replaced with a metal one from a later 300 series tractor. Since the ID on my 312 is on the seat pan I assume that is where this one is also. As far as the engine I am still looking. Sorry - still not much help. Still no closer to ID'ing the exact year. C-Series14 15 #33 Posted October 9, 2009 Please explain how you got Oct. the 21th. out of that number., and what is the 4 on the end for. Goes by the julian calendar, like we do in the military....1 thru 365 unless a leap year then there is 366. The first number is the last number in the year followed by the 3 digits for the julian day.

gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,451 #35 Posted October 9, 2009 Thanks Mike and Terry. With the few numbers recorded for the 1981 Cxx5 series the only one so far that it can not be is a C-85 8-speed. Have a serial of 19813 on 0345 and the one in question is before that with a higher serial number. If anyone has a serial and build date for any of these models please post them and see if we can figure this out. Garry
