Black Hoods with 8 Speeds

Recommended Posts

gwgdog66

What were the black hood years? I can make out part of the number on this one. I can make out the 21-1xx80. The engine is a K321S Spec 60424, serial number 14135580. I can date the engine as a 1984. I can't find any Info on the Toro site for an 8 Speed with a 14 HP single. :scratchead:

Your machine is 1985 or later.

If the engine is original then it's probably this one, as only two came with that spec. number and the other machines model is significantly different:

21-14K801

1985

Garden Tractor

314-8

8-Speed

Kohler

K321S-60424

Try this page, in sections B and C:

http://www.mywheelhorse.com/modules.php?na...o=show_doc&id=3

And you'll probably need these:

Wheel Horse Master Model List

Wheel Horse Interchange-ability List - 1955-2000

I was thinking that may be the model number myself until I looked at the parts diagrams and the hood style was showing the newer style hood on the 314-8.

I'm beginning to think this one may not have the original engine on it. :scratchead:

Tractor data . com is saying that from 1980 to 1984 they made the C 145 with 8 speed and automatic. 14hp Kohlers. none of the numbers fall into this catagory do they? These should be black hoods, I think.

Are the two "XX" numbers in the model number completely obliterated, or can you make a guess at them?

I could be wrong, but from looking at the dash tower in the pictures, I'm fairly certain it's not a 300-series machine with a transplanted hood......

I think the 314-8 is the lone 300 series with a 8 pinion tranny in the 8 speed

I agree with Duff, that is not a 300 series dash tower, but a black hood dash tower. The last black hood was 1984. Exactly where is the id plate located at? I can't remember where it was on my 1981 C-125. Here's what the dash tower would look like on a 1985: http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/index.php?showtopic=7747

They are not legible.

T-Mo that is what is leading me to believe it is an early 80's C seires with a transplanted engine. I was leaning twards an 84 C-145, but can's find any info that a C-145-8 was made in 84.

The ID tage is right below the dash plate in the center. If you look at picture #2 it is the shinny area just below and to the left of the throttle knob.

I'll find a soft lead pencil and some tracing paper and see if I can pull more numbers off of it that way.

Duane,

No shaker mount on this engine. The oil pan bolts straight to the frame. I power washed it today, and found more evidence that the engine has been worked on before. Thick black silicone on the pan gasket.

I tried the pencil and tracing paper trick today, and didn't yield any more numbers.

I am thinking, from the depth of the seat pan, that it is definantly an 83 0r 84. From the pictures I have looked at, in the picture section, the 80', 81', and 82's all had a really deep inset of the seat. Haven't seen a picture of the 1983's, but the 1984's had a shallower seat inset. Were all of the Black hoods manufactured from 80 to 84 and were they all B or C series?? :scratchead:

The C-145 8-speed was only made in 1980-81.

1980=01-14K801

1981=01-14K802

In 83-84 the C-145 was only offered as an auto.

The deep seat pans, or fender deck, that you are referring to were the plastic fender deck ones. The shallow fender decks were steel.

Rod, it sure looks a lot like your machine, doesn't it. The black on the hood has been painted, it is squared off by the stering wheel where the body lines are rounded. I wonder if I can do a search with the partial model numbers and get some possible matches. :scratchead:

The ID tag may start with a 21- number but that tractor is a 1980-1984. If the 14hp engine is newer, then it doesn't make it a C-145, it could be a different 1980-1984 8-speed...C-105, C-125, C-165, etc with a different engine on it. The fender pictured was the same from 1980-1984 and of course newer.

I see in my info that engine spec number as a 1985 314-8.

Sounds like they put an engine and hoodstand panel from a 1985 tractor on a 1980-1984 tractor...

Like Mike said its a 1980-84. By it not haveing a hour meter its either a 8,10,12 hp.

The engine thats on it is does denote which one it is as we know its not stock.

With all the C's(exept 195&Ds) and early 3/400 made from 73 to 86 (give or take) you can put a 10hp and up tall pan kohler on them without any modifcations, everything will transfer.

I have replaced a 8hp on one of these and all that is needed is the mid sixties engine mounting plate.

As for the fender pan that also is not a give away. The steel pan from 85 to 07 will fit, only the holes for the hydro access are different. And because its a stick a 73-79 will fit, if the hole for the gas tank was cut out.

This is the beauty of WH's, you can mix and match parts from the mid sixties on :scratchead:

Mike,

The second line serial number is 0294, I seen in the post you made on the 105 that this is the build date.

Terry,

It's a 1980, built on or about 21 October, the engine and fender must have been replaced.

Snow thrower choices:

OLD number: Model 06-42ST04 42" Snowthrower

NEW number: Model 06-48BC03 / 79350

Both require Tire Chains, Wheel Weights or Rear Weight Box (WH recommended)

i know that the bottom set of number are supposedly be the julian date the tractor was manufactured . but how can we have a vin number that starting with a number 21 from the 1985-1989, and a julian date code of 0294 being make in oct of 1980. the starting vin should start with a 01 number and not a 21 number 01-1xx80x. help me figure this out.

Got me! :scratchead: Are you 100 percent sure it is 21- and not 01-? How about a pic? I guarantee it is a 1980-1984 model, but that is all I am sure of!!!! :hide:
