rmaynard 16,809 #2 Posted 7 hours ago Due to the fact that I am renting my side of the garage to my grandson this winter, the 416-H had to sit out in the weather last night. 9 degrees when I attempted to start it this morning. I had to give it a shot starter fluid to encourage it to fire. But it did and as always, the Eaton 1100 was ready to go as well. Pushed about 5" of accumulated snow with no problem. Two hours later I can't see the driveway. Oh well, round number 2 is going to have some ice. 3

Garage full of Wheel Horses and Fords, Excellent. I noticed the angle on your snowplow, is there a specific reason you have it laid back so far? Also how you liking the Bronco? I'm sure shoveling snow would be a pleasure with a couple of Wheel Horse Jr. snow shovels. 1 3 2

wallfish 18,932 #11 Posted 6 hours ago Guess I'm NOT ready! I've been having some slow sluggish turnover on the 520-HC with 2 stage blower but it'll usually fire up. Fires right up easily all year long until it gets real cold out. Figured it was a weak battery so I bought a new one. Freezing temps and that thing will barley crank it over and even with a brand new battery fully charged. So, I hooked up some jumper cables to a running van thinking of the possibility of a bad / weak new battery. Well, I can see the headlights dim when cranking it over so I know there's plenty of juice. Appears like I need a new starter or to pull apart the old one and clean it up is in order. She cranked over much better once the starter was warmed up with a heat gun but what a PITA that's going to be later this evening and tomorrow morning in a foot or two of snow. UGH!!!!!! 2
squonk 45,151 #12 Posted 5 hours ago I have the same Ariens 7/24 blower. Haven't used it in 2 years. Last time I did it was at my son's house in Buffalo with 4ft. of concrete snow. I start it up when I get it out of the shed in Dec.

We been thinking of trading wife's 2020 Fusion in for some kind of SUV it has been/is a very good car but we really wanted an SUV we she got it. The cold weather really does bring out all the weak battery/starter problems to the surface.

UGH!!!!!! 3 suggestions: If you could spray some thin oil into the starter nose it might help. If you have thick oil like SAE30, it would put a lot of load on the starter. A poor connection for the battery cables would also act the same way, check both ends of each cable.

Seriously considering retirement. 16 minutes ago, lynnmor said: 3 suggestions: If you could spray some thin oil into the starter nose it might help. Cables were done over the fall but that doesn't mean there can't be something. Sprayed some WD in there to try and wash it out. The oil thing might be an issue as I can't remember what I had for lunch let alone what weight oil was used when it was changed last. And yeah, that straight 30 gets thick like molasses in freezing temps so now I'm guessing it might be that

Ordinary WD-40 is a very poor lubricant it would be best to use something like gun oil or sewing machine oil. Flushing out the gum with WD-40 may be OK but even then the base might keep out good oil. My 12hp-8 No Name is same way and I done same as you, thought it was weak battery because it was pretty old. New battery didn't help went through all connections and cleaned/repaired didn't help. Got a NOS Kohler starter with some stuff I traded on and it is exactly what I need but haven't got around to putting it on yet .

Both my WHs have been starting fine, even after sitting all fall. The 855 had to get the belt re-tensioned this morning, and the Commando needed a shot of go-juice.
