B80 transmission options

Can anyone advise if a transmission from a 657 would be a direct bolt in swap for my 4 speed in my b80? There is a parts 657 tractor being sold locally for cheap on MP. Before i make an offer and drag this home i figure ill ask the experts. The brief AI research of course gave me conflicting answers. Reason for swap is last snow we got i cracked the hub. Upon further inspection the woodruff keyway was wallowed out causing damage to axle. I might eventually repair the transmission but its very low on the things to do list. The B80 is a 3rd string backup to my 312-8 & 308-8. If it does, great ill make an offer, if not ill wait for something local to pop up. I dont mind some fabrication but didn't feel like getting involved in hub removal right now, done it a few times, always an unpleasant experience. Thanks in advance for any input regarding.

You have an early B80 with a 4 speed. Yes the 657 4 speed should bolt right in.

Other options include going with a Raider 6 speed (easy swap with some mods) or an 8 speed like in your 300 series (a bit more work) My:twocents-02cents:...

657 has a 3-speed. That is NOT a direct swap for your mid-70s tractor.

You have a 4 speed.

The brake drum is in a different location and the brake linkage pulls from a different direction.

I stand corrected. But, if the 657 is complete & runs, why not??

You can make it work but only with one pedal. The B and C Series from 1974 up had two pedals.

To put an early transmission into a later tractor you are far better off to swap over the entire transmission tunnel so the linkage is all there and correct. Having tried this a couple times I'll very likely never do it again.

To get a two pedal tractor back up and running again your best bet is to wait for a correct four-speed or any of the eight speeds.

its appears complete with some aftermarket honda engine attached, no clue if that runs. However i could just swap my kolher 8hp over to the 657 and use that which would be easier to do then swapping trans, no? I agree i wouldnt swap trans only to not have correct linkage ready for brake etc. Its on MP in NJ no clue how to link ad to this thread. I appreciate all the feedback

Links to ads aren't allowed.

Without knowing the condition of the rest of the tractor it's tough to say but you'll obviously have to change the engine, all wiring. Ignition coil and switch.

One thing to keep in mind is that a 657 only has one pedal and if you're accustomed to that, it's fine.

All of Trina's tractors are single pedal rigs and I refuse to drive them more than just a few feet. I like a separate brake pedal.

You have to go THROUGH the clutch part to get to the brake part.

Every truck I've ever driven and every fork lift I've ever operated has had a separation of clutch and brake.... except the increasingly rare AUTOMATED manual transmission trucks. Note the difference in spelling.

No clutch pedal. 😕

But you don't drive it like a true manual transmission in the construction industry.

Now most of both machines are automatics.
