My 312-8 tractor does not go into foward or reverse. Drive belt is turning shaft in transmission, wheels are keyed to axles, but when jacking up rear end, wheels will not turn in opposite direction like my orther wheel horse tractor. What could be the problem<Shifter set screw is in place, not broken. thanks brent

Couple questions:

-Does the brake drum turn when the tractor is rolled (both wheels turn same direction).

- Are you certain that the high/low shifter is in one or the other and not between the two? If it is between, the back half of the transmission is effectively disengaged from the driven half.

- When the engine is running, and you let the clutch out, does the engine pull down as if heavily loaded or just spin freely?

Side note- these transmissions have no syncronizers. As such, you sometimes have to "rock" the tractor to get the gears to mesh. Same applies for the high/low shifter.

It could be that the high/low shifter is between gears - there is a hidden nuteral there.

Try moving that shifter from high to low, or low to high.

Nope, never ever done that on my 14-8 no name - not ever - not me.  Not even the time I got out the Allis Chalmers to tow the 14-8  back to the shop 'cause it wouldn't  move forward or backwards.

Brake shaft rides directly on the differential bull gear. If it doesn't turn when the tractor rolls, something is wrong.

You will likely have to open the case and have a look. Possibly a busted differential.

Firstly, you won’t really know what you need until you’ve go it open.

Secondly, come back here with pictures of what you find and any questions. Plenty of expertise here for the asking.

Thirdly, vendors listed at the top of this page under “Classifieds” have LOTS of parts, both new and used.

Lastly, once you know what you need, posting a “wanted” in the classifieds can often find a member open to selling the parts you need--some may even be close to you.

Our Vendor section is much more knowledgeable than most online stores.

I the transmission section there are pinned threads with bearing and seal cross referanccs for all the transmissions. In the Instructionals section there are videos by. steveasarus for disassembly and reassembly of these transmissions
