I had to drive from The Geneva NY thruway exit to the GM training school that was in Depew (Buffalo) in an 85 Toyota PU with the 5spd 4 Popper. Just as you merge onto the main highway you're going up hill so I'm winding it up pretty good to get to 65 MPH. There is a bridge partway up and it's a cold morning. I got on that bridge and the truck changed lanes in a blink of an eye. Every bridge I went over after that I felt the back end starting to switch lanes until I figured out to coast over everyone. Made for an interesting trip. 3
8ntruck 8,426 #27 Posted Saturday at 04:45 PM (edited) Nice tractor. What do you have planned for it? Not to brag, but my '15 Ram 1500 with a 5.7 Hemi got about 1/2 mpg better in a run halfway across Mo. with the utility trailer to pick up a C-195 roller. It was in the summertime, though. Good time on the trip. It takes us about 13 hours to make the 700 mile trip from our Mi. location to our Mo. winter location. Brockport Bill 2,163 #33 Posted Saturday at 07:46 PM Congrats !!!!!!!!! ---- Really like the black hood C series - have two of the c175s --- and now trying to save a C165 which grandson and I rescued but likely needs engine rebuild --- have been looking for a C145 for few yrs - - hard to find - prefer the H model -- drove 3 hrs to see one in Pennsylvania 2 yrs ago expecting to bring it home, only to find when i got there a frame crack in the frame plate connection to the tranny -- decided not to take it - probably would have been worth the time and cost to repair the crack. 4
Sparky-(Admin) 24,196 #34 Posted Saturday at 08:13 PM Update: It’s a 1984 and has the original/correct Kohler 14 under the hood. Hubcaps are off and undergoing a cleaning (they will be up for sale soon). It’s nice to buy a tractor that has no rips in the seat, a battery that’s still good after you get it home, tires that aren’t flat after you get home, working head and tail lights (LED tail lights ) Wheels will definitely need to be cleaned up and painted. 1

No real plans for it. But it’ll do some mowing this summer and just maybe it’ll get some snow plow time in next winter. Might be nice to have hydraulic lift. And the MPG thing. Tundras like mine (same vintage) are legendary for their dependability but also for guzzling fuel. I’m usually at 14-15 just knocking around here local so I was real pleased to break 17 yesterday.
ebinmaine 76,287 #36 Posted Saturday at 08:27 PM Quite a nice tractor there Mike. Good find. A little fresh wheel paint and some touch ups in other places will make a nice difference.

'86 or so? The metal fender pan was on all 1985 models 300, 400 and 500s. Don't know if any Black Hoods came with them.

When I picked that one up it had a busted old plastic fender pan. Uncle Jim’s magic parts shed coughed a steel one up.

Does yours metal pan appear to be "factory" @Sparky? Obviously not the led tail lights so maybe the pan has been replaced?

Looks factory…but no way to be sure. I thought the factor ditched the plastic fender and went steel in ‘84. At least that’s what I heard. Maybe a 1984 parts diagram would show it being metal and an 1983 as plastic?

In town mileage is measured in feet. I love our Tundra. Wouldn't have any other full size pickup. Edited 9 hours ago by kpinnc 1

Different driving styles have a huge impact on mileage. My spouse gets poorer mileage and needs brakes replaced more often--see the connection? I cannot beat my cruise-control’s efficiency in flat and gently rolling terrain, but I’ve learned to switch it off on significant downhills where I can maintain speed while “coasting” and then click “resume” near the bottom (I do NOT shift into neutral--that is dangerous).

Pretty much exactly why my mileage is better. And yeah, my wife can wear out the soles of a couple pairs of shoes on a long trip pressing the gas and brake pedal. She says my driving would bore her grandpa out of his mind, but my numbers are all the justification I need!
