When I install an electric fuel pump on my C165 can I simply run power to the coil and ground the pump to the frame?

If the coil is energized during the start and run positions of the ignition switch that I don't see why this won't work.

The only caution I would add here, ground importance can't be overstated.

Original Wheel Horse grounds were adequate at best. Just a few years of corrosion... no more ground.

That's why I like to run separate grounds to every major component.

Most likely. If you are using the stock coil with the built-in resistor, fine. If you are using a replacement with a separate external resistor, power it from the key "Run" side at a full 12 volts. And - add an inline fuse.....
