Krice58 113 #1 Posted yesterday at 03:37 PM (edited) Having a weird issue with the starter wire from the ignition switch to the pto switch smoking every time I try to crank it over. I redid some wiring on the 75 C160 recently to clean things up. Everything functioned correctly before but now it will not crank from the key, it will start with solenoid jumped and every time I try to turn it over with the key I get nothing but a smoking wire. I can’t figure out why this is happening, it’s just the short wire from the ignition switch to the pto switch. The wire is intact, well insulated and not touching anything other than the two terminals it needs to. I’ve tried multiple ignition switches that I know are good and I get the same result. Any ideas? On a side note, I’ve been posting semi-regularly for the past few months and I just want to say how much I appreciate this community. You guys have been extremely helpful in problem solving and it makes me so happy that I’ve been able to revive my grandfathers old horse that I remember so vividly from my childhood. I’m not sure my wife would be as thankful because I’ve gone from 1 Wheel Horse to 5 in a short period of time, but I’m sure she’ll get over it. Ed Kennell 43,388 #2 Posted 23 hours ago Probably a short to ground in the wiring between the ignition switch and the solenoid trigger lug.

The one that goes from to and from the pedal switch? Edited 22 hours ago by Krice58
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,786 #4 Posted 21 hours ago I would suspect a short in the pto switch or pedal switch if the wiring in between is OK. Is this the switch you have?
Ed Kennell 43,388 #5 Posted 21 hours ago (edited) Could be anywhere in the starting circuit wiring. Ignition switch to PTO safety switch to pedal switch to solenoid. The wire between the PTO and pedal switches would be my guess. May be rubbing on the steering gear. Unplug each of these three wires and use your ohm meter to find the short to ground. The last part - as long as there is not a whole one in the Parlor or a Unidrive in the tub, you're good....

Sounds like a plan
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,786 #9 Posted 15 hours ago Look for a flat spot worn into the wire insulation that has been in contact with the steering shaft for years. A closer inspection of that flat area may reveal a line down the center of it. That line could be bare wire causing the short.

One by one just disconnect wires and look for smoke. First disconnect the wire from the PTO switch that comes from the ignition switch, turn the key. If no smoke reconnect that wire then disconnect the wire from the PTO switch that goes to the pedal switch, turn the key. If no smoke then reconnect that wire and disconnect the wire from the pedal switch to the solenoid. Hope this is helpful.

Did you see it? If not click on the picture of the switch in the link. It is one of the thumbnails that comes up.
